It is my belief that great teachers result in great students. There are many ways that teachers can have a positive influence on their students and co-workers. In order to be the best educator I can be, I feel that it is my responsibility to take part in continuing education trainings as well as to collaborate with my fellow educators. It is important to remember that technology is always changing. Therefore, I must immerse myself in what is new and current to better the lives and education of my students. Ongoing professional development keeps me up-to-date on the latest findings of how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, and new curriculum resources (Lebeau, 2008). I recognize that every child is unique and that children of all abilities deserve quality care and education in a safe and nurturing environment. “To learn, children and adolescents need to feel safe and supported. Without these conditions, the mind reverts to a focus on survival” (Parrett & Budge, 2016, par. 1). Educational psychologists have proposed that educating the whole child helps students be the most that they can be (Olson, 2013). Maslow referred to this as “self-actualization” (Olson, 2013). Every child deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. I strive to follow NAEYC’s Developmentally Appropriate Practice guidelines so that all of my preschool students will not only be kindergarten ready, but prepared for more challenging content when they enter kindergarten. My developmentally appropriate classroom encourages child-initiated, active learning as children are able to explore their environment and construct knowledge based on their interests. According to institute of medicine (IOM) report of 2010, the United States has the opportunity to renovate its health care system to provide affordable quality care that is reachable to all and leads to improved health outcomes (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). The impact on nursing of the 2010 institute of medicine formulated with the purpose of producing a report that would make endorsements for an action oriented design for future of nursing profession. The major transformation of the nursing profession is needed to achieve the upgraded health care system through nursing practice, education, and leadership. Overall, the main goal is to provide safe, quality, patient-centered care that is manageable and reasonable to all and enhanced health outcomes. The IOM report offers recommendations that collectively serve as a plan “to ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training, improve nursing education, and provide opportunities for the nurses to assume leadership positions and to serve as full partners in health care redesign and improvement efforts, and improve data collection for workforce planning and policy making” (IOM, 2010 p.1).

Nursing is one of the most popular professions in healthcare. To become a professional nurse, one must acquire certain level of education, whether it is at associate or baccalaureate degree level. Once becoming a nurse a number of professional standards must be maintained to stay abreast with the profession. The aim of the report is to put forth recommendations that allow nurses to “(1) ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training (2) improve nursing education, (3) provide opportunities for nurses to assume leadership positions and to serve as full partners in health care redesign and improvement efforts, and (4) improve data collection for workforce planning and policy making” (Institute of Medicine Report, 2010). Taking the time to reflect on one’s career can increase self-awareness and enhance professional development. A career development plan is a confidential and integral document created by an individual which outlines the activities undertaken during their life journey. Therefore, a professional development plan documents one's goals and skills required to accomplish dreams and is influenced by internal and external factors. Hence, a professional development plan is reminiscent of ones’ past experiences and a glance at the future. Having a professional development plan in place is critical for graduate students in nursing because it enables one to keep track of their progression. Professional development is critical to success in a teacher’s career. Teachers need to be opened to continuing their education and consistently reflecting on lessons and interactions with students. At the expert stage of teaching, “the teacher’s practice is characterized by fluency, automaticity, and efficiency” (Garmston,1998). In order to achieve this level of teaching practice, the educator must continue to learn new teaching strategies, understand the curriculum, recognize students and their differences, and conduct self-reflections. A teacher who is dedicated to professional development and wanting to improve their teaching, will make a stronger impact on students. I believe that I am in the Proficient level of performance according to the Framework for Professional Teaching Practices (Danielson, 1996).
As a child enters a classroom they should be surrounded by literacy in every learning center around the room. “A learning center is a defined space where materials are organized in such a way that children learn without the teacher's constant presence and direction.” (Cited Landry, et al., 2014, pg. 12) These areas consist of blocks, dramatic play, music, toys and games, discovery, sand and water, art, easel, writing, library computer and listening. Each center needs to be set up to ensure supervision is assessable from all areas of the room as well as provide child friendly hands-on activities that generate individual creativity, observations and real life experiences. “Children should also receive multiple opportunities to experience specific linguistic concepts in diverse contexts and experiences organized to foster repetition as an integral part of the classroom routine.” (Cited Justice, 2004, pg. 42)
Entering my kindergarten teaching experience in the last quarter of school year I had to quickly become familiar with kindergarten content standards and the school’s curriculum. To do this I observed my mentor teachers instructional time with the children and gained as much information as I could about the children’s educational standing by developing a professional relationship with the my mentor teacher and the children. I learned that the majority of my kindergarten children had not previously attended preschool and that this was their first year of school. I found that interacting with the children in social activities provided me with great insight to their literacy, math, science, and social studies development. In reviewing the children’s class projects, school displays, and an array of their work sample along with my mentor teachers year-long assessments I was able to recognize challenging, emerging and advanced content areas of the children’s core curriculum. These emerging and challenging content areas is what I centered my curriculum planning around. “Information about each child’s learning and development is used to evaluate teaching effectiveness. This may lead to changes in schedule, curriculum and teaching strategies, room set up, resources, and so on.” (Bredekamp and Copple, p. 249)
The education world has been greatly influenced by rapidly changing technology and the increasing availability of information. Schools have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to incorporating technology into the learning environment, however, many more advances need to be made. In all areas of the country, educators are trying to help students keep up with technology, but there are more changes that are essential for preparing the next generation for the future.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
