Effective teachers must assess their students in order to improve student achievement. Proverbs 4:13 says, “Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” Teachers can see if students are retaining the instruction by using assessments. One type of assessment instrument that teachers can use is formative assessments. Formative assessments are a collection of practices that lead to actions that improve learning. In order to consider an assessment formative, the teacher must use the information that is gathered from the assessment to adjust teaching and learning (Chappuis, 2009). Another type of assessment instrument that teachers can use is summative assessments. Summative assessments provide evidence of student achievement for the purpose of making a judgment about student competence or program effectiveness. It is also used to determine how much students have learned at a particular time such as at the end of a nine weeks. With summative assessments a letter grade, number, or a comparison to a standard is used. This type of assessment reports levels of achievement (Chappuis, 2009). Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” Portfolios should show growth, and if it is showing growth, the students will have a reason to take pride in their work just like the book of Galatians talks about. Another way teachers can monitor and document student achievement is with progress monitoring. Progress monitoring is a component of Response to Intervention (RtI) which has become well-known since the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2004. It determines students’ responsiveness and unresponsiveness to interventions that are provided to students and indicates a student’s movement among intervention tiers (Mellard, McKnight, & Woods, 2009 ).
