Society can be very diminishing and very hurtful. I say hurtful by the way many people criticize one another by the way we walk, talk, and act with others or even alone. As we grow older we fall into different categories such as community, religion, and the list goes on. In between all that there is certain norms and values to follow. There are certain types of norms and values we have to follow in our community to not get harassed. First, before I committed a norm violation and making an observation I had to be able to understand what values, norms, folkways, sanctions, and mores were. “Values are ideas of what is desirable in life. I crawled in the store Walmart on a busy Sunday like if I was a baby or even a toddler. This I would consider to be a norm violation because normally a young teen is not seen walking and crawling like a little baby. Immediately I had many people including teenagers and adults looking at me as if I had a mental illness. There were various times when I would wobble like if I was learning how to walk and then I would fall. A worker at the store came over to see if I needed help, but the way she was speaking to me was very slow and sounded out most words. I denied help and continued to do my norm violation. To me it was absolutely astonishing how many time I got criticized. I did not get to hear all the criticism, but the ones I did hear were harsh. The comments went from just stating if I was dumb to stating that I was a “stupid retarded kid on drugs”. However, when I was doing this act I also seen a couple of little toddlers doing almost the same crawl and wobble but the difference was that many parents thought it was a “cute” act. Now shuffling is a type of dance that involves a person sliding and picking up the legs like a running-motion. What caught my attention was that not many people attend soccer games, but he was dancing with no one around and the people who would pass by would make some rude comments and start laughing. Many actually sanctioned him and told him what his purpose was to dance all alone at the high school. Usually at high school or any sport events you would not see people dancing in a weird way, and of course this guy was just going ballistic with all the motions and moves he was performing. This unusual, but yet creative person was really into his dance session as I witnessed it. I will admit that I did criticize him with my friend, until I realized that it is not normal but society needs to accept the way certain people act; unless the person is acting out in a violent and offensive
Society is not a realm in which all of the rules are listed on paper; people naturally abide them due to their countless experiences. The results of these incidents or the incident as a whole sometimes transform itself into an unspoken code that people are assumed to know by heart. For example, humans are treated differently - usually with more respect and higher expectations (such as CEOs or famous actors and actresses) - when they are in a very high position or level in an industry. No matter how much or little they do, they are frequently noticed more by the media than anyone else. But how about those who live in their normal lives trying to bring home the bread and milk for their families? The world is filled with many different types of societies and cultures. This is due to the fact that many people share dissimilar beliefs and ideas, as well as diverse ways of life. People lived under different circumstances and stipulations, therefore forming cultures and societies with ideas they formulated, themselves. These two factors, society and culture, are what motivate people to execute the things that they do. Many times, however, society and culture can cause downgrading effects to an assemblage if ever it is corrupt or prejudiced. Society and culture not only influences the emotions individuals have toward things like age differences, religion, power, and equality but also the actions they perform as a result.

The social norm behavior violation that I engaged in was taking my dog, along with a stuffed animal dog on a walk around our neighborhood. I picked this particular social norm to violate because when walking my dog daily, many people ask to stop and pet my dog so I was curious how that would change if they saw me as well walking a stuffed animal. I do not take the elevator a lot in my day to day life because I live on the second floor in my residence hall and my farthest I have to travel to get to class is three flights of stairs. I never see the need to wait for the elevator, but even though I probably have not been on one for over four months, I still, like most people, remember the social norms that go along with riding in one. When you go in you either push the button for the floor you need or you ask someone to press the button for you. If you were having a conversation with someone either you wait to continue it when you get off or you lower your voice considerably. These rules obviously only apply if there are strangers in the elevator with you. If you are alone in an elevator you can essentially do anything (that still follows all of the laws. You could sing to yourself, run in place, or even play patty cake and no one would know. The problem is, once someone gets on the elevator with you, these behaviors are now breaking a norm. My social norm violation entailed facing people while standing in every elevator. In each elevator I used, I exchanged short greetings with the people boarding it then stood while facing them. Additionally, I looked directly into their faces one at a time, but in a polite and respectful way. This was a violation of social norms at the shopping mall, as everybody with whom I shared the elevator seemed to be concerned about my behavior. Despite my outward confidence in the elevator, I was scared and really felt embarrassed. I was mortified because I looked out of place and my actions were seen as unusual. Some of the irritated looks that I got from the public made me feel even more embarrassed. On the other hand, I was scared since I had no idea of what could happen at any moment as a result of my actions. At one point, I nearly trembled at the thought of being slapped by a huge man whom I was staring at. I also knew that I could cause panic, especially to the children and this made me feel guilty.
The norm that I violated during this exercise was facing the elevator backwards every time I got onto an elevator. This experiment involved me violating a social norm and observing my peers reaction towards me doing something that is not normal and as most would weird. I surveyed three different groups of individuals to receive the best results for this observation. I rode on the elevator, but instead of facing the front looking “normal” which is facing the door. As know as the unstated social norm, I stood facing the opposite direction of the exit/entrance. I received many reactions like laughing, being asked if I were okay, even had someone ask if I were blind or needed help.
Being influenced by society is inevitable. As the society developed, it shaped us in many different ways. Doubtlessly, our social background has affected our behavior, attitude and more importantly, life chances. Consequently, our life altered in either good or bad from those configurations of the society. And for me, I’m not an exception. Back in Vietnam, I was taught the rudimental about respect for others. For my norm violation I decided to violate the norms of an elevator. The reactions people gave me was not something that The first time I preformed this I felt very uncomfortable and I could tell that the people around me did also. I looked at their eyes looking at me then wondering the elevator to avoid any type of contact with me. I could also tell that their bodies tensed up, because I was making them uncomfortable.
Going into this norm project I was not expecting violating a norm to be so difficult and uncomfortable. My best friend, Savannah was not in on the norm violation which is what made it so hard for me. Her mother’s birthday dinner was held at olive garden and all of Savannah’s close relatives were attending which is why I thought it was the perfect opportunity for a norm violation. I always order the chicken Alfredo pasta and a small salad on the side. When ordering I was polite as usual and when the waiter brought out the breadsticks I ate two at a time and I didn’t close my mouth while chewing. Savannah and her family were repulsed and it took everything in me to continue on. When the pasta came out I ate it with my hands. Savannah then turned to me with anger and said “Lety, we have forks for a reason!” I looked at her in the eyes nodded and said “I know”, and continued on with my meal. The waiter and her family continued to give me looks of disgust and bewilderment. Savannah later told me her mother said “What the hell is wrong with Lety, didn’t her Mom raise her better.” I am glad I went through in doing this norm because it really gave me perspective on how society views you as a person. We were asked to break a folkway or a social norm. Social norm meaning something that everyone does without thinking or being told to do it just what we as a society form to. Well I chose to ask my friend who is not my roommate or suitemate if I could use my own bathroom and see how she would react. This is a weird task because it is my room my bathroom. People don’t need permission to use their own things. This is normally what we find in grade schools, the kid asking the teacher if they can go to the restroom. This is something we don’t see in college or any other public place one just simply excuses themselves and does their business.
A social norm is a behavior that society deems acceptable or normal. These can simplify our lives by providing us with scripts and costumes. Not all social norms are based on logic. For example, I never understood why certain swearing was bad. Why is it more acceptable to say crap than shit if they have the same meaning? Recently, I broke the social norm of eating food with the designated cutlery. I did this once in public with a group of friends and once in private with one friend. While at lunch with a group of three friends in the cafeteria I ate soup and salad, but used a spoon for both. Later, a different friend and I got a pizza and I ate it with a spoon. After each incident, I pretended to text, but was recording their reactions.
Many people would say that society progresses and becomes more accepting as a whole, but this is not what history has shown. A good example of this would be WWII era Germany. Hitler slowly fed ideas into the minds of German citizens and convinced them that Jews were barely human, if they were even human at all, and that Jews were worth less than everyone else and that what he was doing was for the good of the world. He was trying to create the “perfect” Aryan race and kill anyone who didn’t fit his standard of perfection. He convinced many people that what he was doing was right and so they let him get away with it. The same sort of thing is happening today. Media has convinced people that the lives of the unborn do not matter unless they are wanted by their mothers. They have used the same strategies that Hitler used to dehumanize the Jews, and people are falling for it and actively fighting for the right to end the lives of children while they are defenseless in the womb. Even when science proved that life begins at conception the world today refuses to believe the facts and clings tightly to the lies because they want an excuse to make life easier on themselves. And this, these horrible atrocities, are what happens when we think of morals as relative and pick and choose what rules we want to follow and leave the rest
The social norm I decided to experiment on was maintaining personal space, and I violated this norm by invading strangers’ personal space. I chose to violate this norm because I thought it would be interesting to see different people’s reactions to the violation of a norm that is upheld highly within society. I violated maintaining personal space by sitting closely to strangers. I chose to sit by people who were sitting on benches, that way I could sit directly next to them instead of following to social norm of sitting on the other end of the bench.
