“Socialization is the process through which people are taught to be proficient members of a society. It describes the ways that people come to understand societal norms and expectations, to accept society’s beliefs, and to be aware of societal values” (Little, n.d., chap.5). The Socialisation process also helps individuals achieve a sense of who they are as a person. “During socialization, we learn the language of the culture we are born into as well as the roles we are to play in life” (O’Neil, 2002-2011, para. 1). For example, women from many countries have to adapt to the culture of not being able to do things the men do. It illustrates how completely intertwined human beings and their social worlds are. First, it is through teaching culture to new members that a society perpetuates itself. If new generations of a society don’t learn its way of life, it ceases to exist. Whatever is distinctive about a culture must be transmitted to those who join it in order for a society to survive” (Little, n.d., chap. 5.1). For Māori culture to survive, for example, children must learn the beliefs and norms of Māori, and continue the cultures traditions such as kapahaka, waiata and the spiritual connection Māori have with the land. To me, family is everything, friends, family, support team, enemies occasionally, and I wouldn’t change any of it because it has made me the person I am today. I had a very successful Primary Socialisation stage as I had a lot of family to have physical contact with and to get all the attention in the world from. In my family, we are all encouraged to express ourselves and to do everything at the best of our ability. I believe this influenced me to be very strong willed, adventurous and just live life in the moment. My family is very close, for example, I would spend every day with my cousins when I was younger as my Aunty looked after me whilst my parents were at work.
