Recommended: Strengths and weaknesses in the group process for social work

It is interesting to see the various techniques that social workers are able to use to help individual people. As the chapter mentions, there are various types of groups that are used to benefit individuals: treatment groups (which goals are to directly benefit members), task groups (which is aimed to benefit a broader group of people than themselves). Task groups use various techniques: decision making, nominal group techniques, brainstorming, brain writing, and parliamentary procedure. As discussed in class, social work is a helping profession but it’s also necessary for individuals to feel as though they can change their circumstance. Task groups can help create and implement plans and programs in order to benefit people in the community and society. In group work, social workers need to assess the individuals in a group (their backgrounds and special needs), the group as a whole (roles members take, patterns within the group, interpersonal relationships, etc.), and the environment in which the group operates (is there open and direct discussion?). In the middle stage, much of the work is done as members are confronted with the difficulties of working through their issues and tasks but use the cohesion of the group to find support and progress. By clarifying communication, mediating differences, confronting group members, identifying commonalities to build deeper levels of bonding, and building independence and individuality by identifying and respecting differences, the social worker plays a key role in helping the group reach their goals. As with termination of other social work relationships, group treatment also has an end when the group has made significant progress that the members now need to go on their
