How should we draw the line between normality and disorder? The official definition of a disorder is: persistently harmful thoughts, feelings, and actions. It has been defined as anything that is deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional. It is also based on situation because a soldier killing during wartime may not be considered killing but a civilian in Iowa killing might be considered deviant. What perspectives can help us understand psychological disorders? A medical approach can help us, this would look at disorders as a chemical imbalance that can be offset. The other perspective these can be seen through is a biopsychosocial approach this involves analyzing and carefully changing the patient 's environment to better suite their learning needs. How and why do clinicians classify psychological disorders? They classify disorders so that they can attempt to predict the course of the disorder and possibly suggest a better treatment option. It is also used as a financial asset to justify the use of insurance money. Why do some psychologists criticize the use of diagnostic labels? Once we label someone we will naturally view that person differently and in turn treat them worse. What are anxiety disorders, and how do they differ from ordinary worries and fears? In short the answer is, if it is intense and persistent. Anxiety is a normal thing that all people experience in some capacity but if this does not go away after a certain time period or situation than it may be an anxiety disorder. What produces the thoughts and feelings that mark anxiety disorders? Unfocused, out-of-control negative feelings mark an anxiety disorder. What are somatoform disorders? disorders: a helpful step into the future or a harmful step back to the past?.
It is never pleasant to feel anxious or distressed for any reason. However, there are several people who are diagnosed with anxiety disorders as they are very prevalent today. Mental health professionals are helping people overcome hurdles such as panic attacks, severe worry, social anxiety and other specific phobias. I think that anxiety is an emotion that everyone experiences at one time or another in their life. Anxiety can have a negative effect on an individual if it interferes with one’s daily routine and keeps them from doing what they normally do.
Many clinical psychologists choose to employ a variety of theoretical orientations depending on factors such as setting and the type of mental illness they are treating (Gabbard, 2005; Kemp, 2014). For example, a clinical psychiatrist who is treating someone suffering from severe depression will often use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy as well as medication to treat the illness (Kemp, 2014). A common belief concerning the prescription of psychiatric medicine is that a drug’s side effects may in fact create new problems (eg. dependency) that the individ...
In ancient times, a superstition was once believed by humans that erratic behavior was the possession of spiritually evil demons, that only wizardry or sorcery could mend and cure the mentally ill. In 1808, a man named Professor Johann Christian Reil developed a new medicine field called Psychiatry, meaning the soul or mind. Eventually, the physicians practicing this medical field were known as Psychiatrist (“History of Psychiatry”). As time passed, the field started to evolve and the knowledge expanded becoming one of the oldest medical fields still existing today (“Psychiatrist – DO/MD”). Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are experts at preventing and treating psychological illnesses such as mental disorders. A Psychiatrist is a significant aspect to the medical field because they gain insight into the human mind, specialize in varieties of mental disorders, and help humans overcome internal problems.
...uld be used in therapy. The obvious limitation to this lies in the ease of transmission of information to other professionals. I feel that limitation is not a serious problem, however, as the usefulness of information given by a diagnosis is questionable. I do, however, concede an serious advantage to the categorical diagnosis in training and research on treatment. It would be impossible to train students in the entire range of presentations that can occur, and having a limited range of diagnoses provides a good foundation for conceptual groupings. Being able to use these groupings for research also fosters better training. This is the one area in which I feel that categorical diagnosis is a requirement. In conclusion, I would find the ideal system to be training using a categorical system, but within the context of actual application a more descriptive system.
Take teachers, for example. Learning that some students are unable to control their behavior or have uncontrollable impulses leads to different treatments and from personal observation, less tolerance for that student. Due to these circumstances, teachers will either change their lesson plans or perhaps block out excess comments or sidebars from said students. Obviously treatment like that seems unfair because of disorder these students have no control over. Why should they be treated substantially different simply because they have a little extra
If you have ever been tense before an exam, a date, or a job interview, you have some idea of what anxiety feels like. Increased heart rate, sweating, rapid breathing, a dry mouth, and a sense of dread are common components of anxiety. But episodes of modern anxiety are a normal part of the life for most people. But what anxiety is so intense and long lasting that it impairs a person’s daily functioning is called an anxiety disorder. It is a general term for several disorders that cause apprehension, nervousness, fear, and worrying. These disorders affect how we feel and behave, and they can manifest real physical symptoms. Mild anxiety is vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety can be extremely debilitating, having a serious impact on daily life.
...dealing with and treating individuals who suffer from them. Over the next few years technology will help us begin to learn more about them and we can then learn more efficient ways of dealing with these disorders. Not only do these disorders have a harmful effect on the individuals who suffer from them, but everyone around them they are affecting as well. That is why these disorders have such a damaging effect on people’s lives. Hopefully one day we know enough about these disorders to prevent them from happening in the first place.
Abnormal psychology in the area within psychology that is focused on maladaptive behavior-its causes, consequences, and treatment. Abnormal psychology deals with how it feels to be different, the meanings the get attached to being different, and how society deals with people whom it considers to be different. The spectrum of differences is wide, ranging from reality defying delusions and severe debilitations to worries and behavioral quirks that we would be better off not having but do not significantly interfere with our daily lives. An example of the milder end of the spectrum is a man who was an eminently successful district attorney, was elected governor of New York on three occasions, and was almost elected president of the United States in 1948. This man, Thomas E. Dewy, reached the pinnacle of success, displaying such quality as rectitude, efficiency, precision, and nearly limitless capacity for hard work. Yet it was this combination of traits that made dewy seem too good to be true. For example, he was never late or absent in his first twelve years of schooling. He lacked a sense of humor and seemed to enjoy life only when he was achieving goals. He also had personal rigidities that restricted him from spontaneity that public figures need so much One of his small quirks was he had a big problem with germs. When he toured prisons, he would not touch a doorknob with out first wiping it off with a folded handkerchief. He also drank three quarts of water a day because of the presumed health effects. Dewey achieved much, but had he been less ridged and more open-minded he might have achieved more, and he might have been a happier person. (R.N. Smith, 1982) Governor Dewey's psychological problems was qu...
The most common solution to medicate with is either antidepressants or a form of psychotherapy. Antidepressants affects brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, the goal of the medication is to restore a sense of chemical balance in the brain, and relieving the individual from a constant state of depression. A doctor may prescribe a patient antidepressants for up to several months, depending on the severity. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, involves a routine discussion with a mental health care specialist (Depression and College Students). There is an incredibly large amount of different antidepressant to cater to those who may not respond to one type of medication. However, often these medicines come with a large list of side-effects. A good friend of mine described the side-effects of his experience with antidepressants, which included difficulty concentrating, insomnia, mood swings, among many other personal side-effects. He would often find it difficult to cope with the amount of side-effects, and he found them to be interfering with his daily routine. However, considering the dangers of depression, he would agree that the side-effects seem to be the lesser of the two
Abnormal behavior is behavior that is dissimilar from what we call normal or a behavior that is not united by the preponderance of the population. Mental illness such as bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia are form of abnormal behavior. Abnormal behavior is of doing things differently from others in which other might think of as “weird”. For example, if someone tries to act in certain way like being funny some people would think of it as being abnormal. It’s the societies that have drawn a line between what is normal and what is abnormal? Even though some behaviors aren’t abnormal but people would still consider it on abnormal behavior. According the people some behaviors they perform might not see as abnormal but for some people the same behavior might seen as abnormal behavior. There was a student in one of my class whenever he would come to class he would properly clean his desk before he sit on it. For some people this kind of behavior would be normal and for some people it might be abnormal behavior. However, due to that sometimes it gets hard to describe what is abnormal behavior? The same way people think about abnormal behavior due to the way some people are behaving however, if we put our attention toward culture. There are different cultures presenting all around the world. Some people would find other people culture odd or the way it being performed are not accepted by different

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. Every person experiences some form of anxiety in his or her lifetime. Anxiety helps us deal with tense situations like using our flight or fight reaction, study harder for an exam, or keep focus on important deadlines. Anxiety can be useful until it gets to the point of interfering with everyday life. Some people explain it as not being able to shut the anxiety off. When anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it becomes a disabling disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). Each year, anxiety disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). There are five major Anxiety Disorders they include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Phobias.
Psychopharmacology, also known as behavioral pharmacology, is the study of the effects of medication on the psyche, observing changed behaviors of the human body and mind, and how substances are manifested. It connects different approaches and various techniques from neuropharmacology, animal behavior and behavioral neuroscience.
