How much is too much social media?

Imagine sitting down for dinner at a favorite restaurant with some close friends that are not seen very often. Everyone is excited to see each other, catch up on new things, and spend time together. Drinks are ordered, small talk is going on, and then all of a sudden no one is talking anymore. Notifications from Facebook are appearing on everyone’s phone, pictures are being uploaded, and statuses are being updated. “In modern day social networking has rapidly soared to become one of the most common ways for people to exchange messages, dialogue and share information. As a result, social media has played a large role in shaping the transformation of ways people communicate with one another. Just a mere decade ago people used to either meet for coffee, stop by one another 's house or pick up the phone and call, but modern society is a fast paced world.” (Goessl). Although social networking sites are a valuable way of communicating, the time spent on them instead of interacting face to face can have negative effects on people and the interpersonal relationships they hold with others.
There is nothing more powerful than a real life connection, no matter how hard one tries to replicate it. Social networking sites can make it difficult for people to distinguish between the meaningful relationships held in the real world, and the casual friendships that are held on social networking sites. By focusing so much of our time and energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections have the potential to become weaker. Although social networking sites are a valuable way of communicating, the time spent on them instead of interacting face to face can have negative effects on people and the interpersonal relationships they hold with others.
