Those few sleepless hours shouldn’t hurt, right? Unfortunately, those few hours could have prevented sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation affects one’s school performance and one’s health too. Many everyday appliances affect one’s sleeping patterns and habits as well. Lack of sleep is a problem not only for me, but for many teenagers. Sleep deprivation also takes a toll on physical and mental health along with other health problems. These obstacles will help one grow as a character because they can learn from their mistakes and solve them. By looking at what causes sleep deprivation, what the effects of sleep deprivation are, and what are the solutions to solve sleep deprivation, one can see that sleep is an important part to succeed in school and life. Sleep can be affected by many factors. Sleep deprivation is caused by everyday appliances. For example, when one goes to bed, they are usually distracted by electronics. Before they know it, an hour or more has passed by which causes them to be tired in the morning for school and studying. In teens, the main cause of lack of sleep is due to being absorbed on their phones,video games, TV, and much more socializing activities. Sleep deprivation can not only be caused by electronics, but by one’s sleeping environment or physical factors. According to the article, “Sleep Deprivation,” it says, “The causes of sleep disturbance are many and varied. Sleep disturbance can, for example, be triggered by relatively simple environmental events, such as excessive noise or too much light. It can be related to physical factors, such as diet or exercise”. The environment you sleep in impacts your sleeping because it is a distraction which will cause someone to not sleep. Sleep is one of our basic needs to survive, however in the modern days sleep deprivation in increasing more and more each day, causing accidents and medical problems for the people and the community. This essay will look at the meaning of sleep and sleep deprivation and the basic perspectives on what motivates sleep and sleep deprivation with the five perspectives; evolutionary, psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive and the hierarchy of needs. This essay will also evaluate the best perspective to eliminate sleep deprivation with the cases studies discussing the general hypothesis of sleep and sleep deprivation.

Another reason that causes the negative relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance is the impact of high-stress level that is caused by sleep deprivation. As mentioned earlier, sleep deprivation could decrease a student’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, it can also make the students feel more stressful. According to the survey conducted in Ball State campus, there are 15 students that often do their homework before they go to bed. 10 students play video games, computer games, and mobile games before they go to sleep. 8 students use their electronic devices to do social activities. 5 students watch movies and television series and 2 students read books before they go to bed. Sleep deprivation has become a major problem with Americans. Over 100 million Americans today suffer from lack of sleep. This has been an ongoing problem throughout the centuries. People owe their bodies sleep and scientist are calling it a “Sleep debt”. An average American owes their body at least thirty hours of sleep. This lack of sleep is as hazardous as drunk driving.

Sleeping is something that is an essential part of human nature and is a must in order for one to be a functional human being. Sleep is an idea that is accompanied by many wives’ tales, including the ideas that one needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night and alcohol helps one fall asleep and sleep more soundly. One myth about sleep is that during sleeping, one is in a state of nothingness. In truth, however, it has been discovered that during sleep the brain is active, variations in heartbeat and breathing occur, and the eyes and ears are active throughout the time of sleep. These activities during a person’s sleep are important because they help that person be more aware, awake, and alert during consciousness. If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially in college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator to their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related the level of performance and health in an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).
Many times people think they can accomplish more if they could eliminate so much sleeping time. However, they are only hurting their productivity if they lose sleep. “One sheep, two sheep, three sheep…nothing helps as I toss and turn under my covers. Blanket? No blanket? I’m too hot; I’m too cold. Why can’t I get to sleep? I’ve been staring at the ceiling for the past hour. My mind is awake and yet my body yearns for rest. I need to wake up in 5 hours. Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep. Ugh, tomorrow’s going to be an awful day.” Everyone needs a night of well-rested sleep each night in order to perform properly and live a healthy lifestyle. However, most teens on average are not getting enough sleep each night due to today’s distractions and school schedule. A recent survey says that 90% of parents think that their teen/child is getting enough sleep each night, while 59% of the teens thought they were not (Lack of Sleep). This growing problem of sleep deprivation in young adults can greatly affect their sleeping habits and later, their health. Sleep deprivation in teens can cause major health concerns, a decline in mental stability, and physical problems, but getting the right amount of sleep every night with the help of certain methods can reap benefits for years to come.
In this paragraph, I will elucidate on how sleep deprivation is associated with low academic performance, poor health, depression, mood disorders and drowsy driving in adolescents. I will substantiate my argument using statistics and studies, performed by researchers in my sources. I will also be defining cardinal terms such as circadian rhythms, sleep deprivation and neurocognitive functioning. Sleep is a very important factor in the human function. Our body and brain is able to reset itself and rejuvenate while we sleep. When we do not get the required amount of sleep, we start to feel lethargic and foggy minded, because our mind and body wasn’t able to replenish itself. Sleep is imperative that an insignificant rest deficiency or lack of sleep can affect our ability to remember things; decisions and can affect our temperament. Chronic sleep deficiency can get the body to feel agitated and it could lead to serious health problems such as, heart problems, stress, acne, and obesity.
