How fast does your Smartphone connect you to the world? Internet devices connect people in different states, cities, towns or even just across the table. Smart phones, computers, TV, and other Internet devices allow us to have instant contact with anyone, anywhere who is also online. Social media creates a virtual experience in real-time format because we can update and share status, pictures, and videos instantly (Anderson). We have access to world events and trivial facts at a moment’s notice, whenever we want them. A recent study by Statista shows the average mobile connection speed worldwide in 2016 is 2.4 megabytes per seconds. That’s amazing! We have grown up with an expectation of instant answers and gratification. With text lingo, abbreviations and emojis, communication has taken on a new meaning. We are using little faces with different expressions to tell people what we are feeling. Users substitute dialog in their life with cyber lingo and understood meanings. A 2012 viewpoint article from USA Today College says that as more generations join this social culture, social media will continue to be the leading method of communication and will begin to affect their ability to communicate in person. Additionally in this article, a graduate from University of South Florida agrees by stating that there is a greater desire to to share with other people you barely know online than to actually hang out and make memories with people you actually know. Furthermore, he continues by saying that, “people tend to want to show others that they are having fun on social media than actually having fun themselves."
