Immigration has been a topic that has caused multiple discussions on why people migrate from one country to another, also how it affects both the migraters and the lands they go. Immigration is the movement from one location to another to live there permanently. This topic has been usually been associated with sociology to better explain how it affects people, cultures and societies. Sociology has three forms of thinking that are used to describe and analyze this topic. Each one is correct and at the same time incorrect in their assessment of immigration. Functionalist sees immigration as something that betters the two nations, however, there is problems when it’s too much immigration or unwanted migration. Social interactionalist sees immigration as a product of everyday interaction. It is true that people communicate with each other on a daily bases around the world whether it be with people of their same country or of different nations. It is a great way for people to better their knowledge of the world around them, however communication with others can be problematic. Some nations don’t speak the same language or speak a version of your language that has different meanings in the words that one may use. There is the possibility of miscommunication arising from people not knowing much about the nation that their conversing with, which has led to wars or bitter hatred towards each other. Conflict theory sees immigration as something that causes conflict and change. Immigration does bring change, but it’s both good and bad change. The good change is that new people with new culture flow into another land and enrich the new land with their way of life. It can be bad with some people coming with mal intent and cause harm to the nation or there is too much in a short time that it causes a shortage off good and overpopulation of some lands. Migration has been a major part of human living and also animals, people migrate for various reasons such as seeking better lives, family, job opportunity, availability of social amenities etc. immigration policies were put in place to monitor and decide who immigrate to a country and these policies have been present since 1906, and these polices have had different reasons for their enactment and these reasons change as time and era changes (Baglay, 2014). The early policies were racially based restriction, economic growth, multiculturalism, restriction on refugee and economic immigration (Baglay, 2014). The Communitarian approach used by Michael Walzer to explain immigration policy is similar to Canadian immigration policy. This paper seeks to discuss and analyze the articles by Joseph Carens and Michael Walzer, explaining the different perspectives of explaining immigration policies. The paper would summarize and contrast the author’s main arguments. It would take a stand on which argument is more persuasive in explaining immigration policy and give reason for this position. It would also use other articles to support or refute each argument made by Joseph Carens and Michael Walzer. Lastly this paper would explain and come to a conclusion of if any of these arguments apply to Canadian immigration policy and give examples of these similarities. Carens and Walzer had very different view on immigration and open border, Carens used the Liberal perspective of explaining open border.

The research helped me gain a ton of information on the topic and how to better understand what’s happening today. I also understand that immigration affects everyone differently, we all have different opinions on the subject. Immigration has always been a huge problem everywhere and it seems like it is only getting worse. Every year, thousands of immigrants try to come into the United States wanting more freedom and better protection from what they receive in their home countries. Although, many immigrants face numerous challenges once they successfully enter the United States. Based on Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s work, “Living in America: Challenges Facing New Immigrants and Refugees,” they talk about the problems that new immigrants experience once they enter the U.S, but also comes up with solutions to fix these complications. There were countless of problems that were listed, but the main issues that immigrants faced included their lack of English, difficulty transitioning to U.S. education, and the lack of health services.

In order to effectively teach the patterns of conflict involved immigration, I have used technology in three different ways; through a short Prezi presentation, an interactive game, and two short videos concerning the differing views of immigration by the two leading candidates in the upcoming Presidential election. By providing a variety of learning materials, my students stay interested and engaged throughout the lesson. According to “Instructional Technology and Media for Learning,” text in the Enhancing Learning with Text and Visuals chapter; not only do a variety of visuals engage students. Visuals also assist in making theoretical ideas more solid, motivate learning by holding their attention longer, and lastly, a variety of visuals assist in remembering content; they hear the information from the teacher, and see it/read it with the visual content. For all of these reasons, new information is easier for students to comprehend using visual content.
