People from everywhere leave their country and families to immigrate to United States looking for the “America Dream.” The term America Dream has different interpretation for everyone. For some people America Dream means the pursuit of material prosperity, for others it means achieving their personal goals in life that they could not achieve in their homeland. Every citizen of the United State of America has the opportunity of achieving it, but it will depend on their perseverance and effort of them. If everyone has the same opportunities in America why do some people's dreams get realize, and others don not? I have heard people say the age of learning a new language can be one of the main factors for people can not be succeed with their America dream. But my friend Diana came to America at the age of 12 years old. She went to the middle school, high school, and finally she graduated. She learn and speaks perfectly English, but she never studied anything.... after her high school education. She works as receptionist in an office, and she is always complaining about her salary. The term “America Dream” for her does not exit; she had never had any obstacle in realize any dream if she would have one. This country gives to anyone the opportunity to study and get a career. College is often made for people of any ages, and different responsibilities, college have many different classes schedule to choose depending of their time . Like me, I can attend it just as part time student, because I have another responsibilities beside my education. Furthermore, I have heard some people say, when you immigrate with your family, it is too hard do something for you because you have to take care for your family first. But after a period of time they realize that it is not so easy as it looks. In my point of view, age it is not one obstacle for people learn a new language and even get a career. We all have the same capacity of learning. Doctors have to get training all time, even after they finish their career to have knowledge of new medicine and more, so this prove that people's age it is not a problem learning. Moreover coming with your family and having more responsibilities than others it is not another problem, it can not stop you from achieving your dream. No matter what, big or small, short or long anyone can achieve their “America Dream” but it will have been easy, we need a lot dedication, perseverance and commitment. There are many challenges that one must face as we go through life. I have faced a few myself, however, none proved more challenging than moving from my country; Jamaica, to the United States and subsequently moving to the state of Wisconsin. Deciding to leave behind family and friends is the hardest decision to make, however, there are a few things that I was not prepared for that made the transition more challenging than expected. Moving away from all that is familiar culturally, socially and economically can be even more of a daunting task than imagined. There are things that are taught to us by our parents and others that are more dictated by our environment than anything else, so when I immigrated to the United States I had three major challenges to overcome.

Affected by my family, my background, and everything around me, I was born in a family who is the first generation to get here. My grandmother, and my parents, along with some other relatives, moved here in search of better opportunities, like those from other countries for the same idea. They started out fresh but had a hard time to get started, when I was little, I assumed it had to be somewhat easy, but for people who do not know English it is like starting from scratch, but they did well, they’ve made it.

For instance, for an immigrant moving is not an easy thing to do they will have to leave everything behind and start over again in a whole different country than their own native country. There are various individuals throughout the world who believe that the American Dream cannot be achieved by all people. Those who agree with this view believe that our culture contains too many roadblocks and obstacles. Some of these obstacles include prejudice, poverty, and social inequality. By actually taking the cards you've been dealt and changing your life with enough perseverance, self sacrifice and dedication and not relying on luck or chance. Initially, the dream is based on the concept of being able to achieve upward mobility in society regardless of your race, gender, economical and social background. The American Dream is that dream of a nation in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with options for each according to capacity or accomplishments. An example from history was when The Irish migrated to the United States during the Great Irish Famine in the 19th century and they were banned from finding jobs or careers. When the Americans saw the Indian citizens who became citizens based off marriage back in the day succeeding in their business careers they passed on a law that stopped the Indians from marrying Americans which made the Indians lose their land owning right and businesses. When the African American slaves were first brought onto US land, they had no other option yet to be a slave and work under the command of Americans while the Americans set out to fulfill their American dreams. The immigrant came to another country with their kid or wife trying give them a better life or attending to change a better job. Even these first generation of immigrants can accept their living environment or job very well, they will still feel unfamiliar about the new world they staying at which reminds me about my aunt and uncle. They have immigrated to America for more than 7 years, got a stable job even their kids. However, when I talked with her about how do they feel about this country, they told me that the culture here is very different from where they came from; therefore, sometimes they had to face some culture shocks. Millions of immigrant moved to America in search of freedom, equality, and success. This is known as the “American Dream”. A famous author names James Truslow Adams stated, “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” (The Epic of America p.214-15).
