finish the task at hand with little thought or time put into it. When I was assigned my first paper in Writing and Critical Inquiry, assigned by my professor Darcy Mullen, I looked at the topic (experience paper: how humor has affected you as a writer) and said to myself “First off, how am I supposed to write about the influences of humor within my writing?” and “ This will just be a quick five page paper that I can easily get at least a B on just by bull-shitting about the effects of humor in my writing”. At first I thought the class would be just like any other class that I could half ass my papers and get by but later I came to the realization that I was in for of a writing experience more than I had originally thought; my first thought …show more content…
The first, and probably the thing that impacted my writing the most, was that I needed to be writing in eleven font, which was something I had never done before. Coming to the realization that writing in twelve font is a lot different than eleven font forced me to better manage my time, as it would take me a longer time to write, what used to be a quick, five page paper. The second thing that I learned from the first essay was that the grading was strict and that I actually needed to pay attention to the rubric, instead of just writing bull-shit to answer the topic of the paper that was assigned. Professor Mullen, after the first essay, informed us that she had an excellent “bull-shit detector”. After hearing this I realized that I would actually need to put effort and thought into my pieces of writing throughout the rest of the semester. The sense of the strict rubric grading put me into a position of stress and worry and I was thinking that I had finally been put into a position where I would be forced to out more effort into my writing; later I would find out that pushing through the hardships of writing the strictly graded papers, on topics I did not particularly, like would better myself as a student, not only in my writing class, but also in all other …show more content…
After figuring out that much effort was needed in order to be successful in my Writing and Critical Inquiry class I was then assigned another paper, later on in the semester, regarding humor as the “umbrella” for the topic of the paper. The assignment was to write a research paper and relate it in some way to the “umbrella” topic humor. Opposed to the first essay, I took my time and decided that if I wanted to become the best writer I can be during my time in Writing and Critical Inquiry, I would need to accept the fact that I needed to incorporate the idea of humor into my writing, instead of pushing it away and thinking how hard or absurd it is to write about humor. For the research paper I decided to research and write about how humor is widely used as a coping mechanism. Now that I had accepted that I could not do anything to change the umbrella topic for the class, I was able to write freely without making excuses and inadvertently stopping myself from creating a well-written piece of writing. For the research paper I followed the instructions on the rubric and put in more time and effort than I had in the first paper for the class. I received an 18 out of 20 points (a 90) on the research paper with my new perspective on how to write in Professor Mullen’s class,
The therapeutic use of humor can be loosely defined as any activities that use the positive emotional responses associated with humor, smiling and laughter to specifically benefit one or more clients’ social, emotional, physical, cognitive or wellness domains. Using humor, therapeutically, involves establishing specific desired outcomes for a client which are facilitated by the use of humor and related techniques. Dattilo & McKenney, (2011) define the therapeutic use of humor when “specialists and others use humor in practice, they play for it to lead to specific therapeutic outcomes”. They emphasize the use of evidence based practice and a goal oriented approach as essential in using humor for therapeutic purposes. Similar to other techniques used, Therapeutic Recreation is using humor to achieve client-established goals requires a systematic approach that harnesses the medicinal benefits of the involved and evoked behaviors.
How is humour created in the story? Discuss Beth’s obvious respect for mother despite her irreverent attitude.
Many people tend to use humor as a positive communication skill to make us laugh. It has long been used as a tool to navigate how we better understand media and politics. In today's crucial times of political chaos, social unrest and in-fighting between political parties, the use of Satire humor is more relevant than ever before. According to Oxford dictionary, satire is defined as the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. In the last decade there has been a staunch increase in technology and a rise in social media, this comes with its own benefits and downfalls. The use of satire humor has been represented
Humor is a seemingly simple, enjoyable construct in life shared and valued by many. Traditionally, humor has been viewed as trivial and lacking substance from an academic and scholarly standpoint. However, humor can be objective in analyzing and answering the same questions philosophers ask, ones that question widely accepted everyday concepts and ideals. The Incongruity Theory reveals the affinity between philosophy and comedy and rebukes the argument that humor is “hostile and irresponsible” (Morreall) in academics.
The reading “On Laughter” really opened my eyes to a more deeper understanding of how humor can make an impact on a piece of writing. Humor isn’t found on the surface of a writing but instead deeper in the context that makes it out of the ordinary. In “The Perimeter of Ignorance” the comedian exemplifies his essay with drops of humor. Some of the humor he displays is misleading. For example, “Cancers take over your body, congenital diseases force an early death”. This is an appalling statement but sometimes can bring out laughter to an audience when their feeling an extreme emotion. He continues by saying “So the universe wants to kill us all. But lets ignore that complication for the moment”. This statement might be a little over exaggerating
Humor is portrayed as the main theme of the two essays by Margaret Atwood, Female Body, and Why We Crave Horror Movies by Stephen King. However, due to different subject matter being discussed, the humor employed in each is dissimilar in many ways. The essay by Atwood is written in relation to the body of a female in which she manages to give the readers a sensitivity of the female body with a comparison of a female mentality to that of a man. She crafts her essay using humorous approach such as wit and inscrutability. King’s essay is more of a straight forward humorous piece in which he uses facts and sarcasm (irony). His expository essay discusses the reasons why people prefer horror movies in such a factual, but silly way.
Humor Humor is when an object or phrase is considered funny or hilarious. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, one of the definitions of humor is, “something that is or is designed to be comical or amusing.” What people find funny differs because there are so many types of humors that can be expressed in different ways. Humor will often lead to laughter, but some people may find a subject amusing while others may find it offensive. It can be making a racial slur or even a Yo Mama joke.
According to Gazzaniga, Heatherton, and Halpern in Psychological Science, an effective to regulate emotion is through humor (430). Humor allows individuals to distance themselves from negative emotions and can strengthen social connections to others (Gazzaniga, Heatherton, and Halpern 431). In Native American communities, laughter and humor are often utilized to cope with stereotypes imposed upon Native Americans by non-Native people. Illustrations of this occurrence can be found throughout works by Native peoples, such as that by Sherman Alexie. These sources involve Native Americans embracing, rebelling against, and bringing attention to stereotypes about who they are and who the can be, all while using humor to cope with the emotions involved
“Morreall argues that, if we want to answer these questions, we shouldn’t focus on whether the joke happens to trade on a stereotype. Instead, he takes the primary problem with some humor to be that it involves disengaging from things with which we ought to be engaged.” (Morreall, 529)
This essay taught me that even though I was learning a lot from this course, that there was still room to improve. Likewise, I ended up with the assumption I had done great on this essay since I wrote about a topic I enjoyed, makeup. I was proven wrong. The evaluation paper called for evaluating and expanding on the quotes you had provided in your paper, something I wasn’t as familiar with until this class. I didn 't do so well on this particular essay but I had the opportunity to learn from my mistakes. Mrs.Robinson gave a get out of jail free card when she said we could rewrite one of our first three essays and this was the essay I chose. After revising this essay, I truly feel like I understand more about the editing process. I went back and checked each paragraph to make sure everything was perfect, changed word choice, and looked over and over for grammatical errors. Because of this I now know that I need to revise the essay before I turn it in since every writer makes
Humor can come in many different forms. Many people are aware of the blatant humor of slapstick, but it takes a keener mind to notice the subtle detail in sarcasm or satire. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift was able to create a piece of literature addressing the faults of the Irish culture while embedding in a humorous essay. Swift’s satire allows for the gravity of the Irish standings to be exploited under the disguise of a proposal for economic benefit.
In the course of this semester of writing, I grew more than I ever had in my ability to write well. I remember on the first day of class several other students were talking about how hard this writing professor is. I was a bit worried and even thought about switching to an easy professor for a guarantee A so I can get a 4.0. Now, I am grateful that I chose to decide to work hard for a 4.0 instead. Even though I may not get it, I am still glad I stayed because for once, I learned and became a better writer. I can see that my knowledge of conventions definitely improved from last semester. I really loved the feedback for my assignments, since it allows me to realize what I need to improve on and what I should keep doing. Unlike the previous semester, the writing professor only told us our grade on the very first assignment after two months. There were no feedback on how I could improve either, so I had no idea if I was having trouble with anything. Prior to this course, I always had trouble writing sentences and organizing them in such a way that flows and delivers my idea well. I also rarely outline or plan out how I will write a paper too, and even when I did, it was very vague. Out of the five learning outcomes, I grew the most in rhetoric knowledge and writing process from the reading responses and 4 assignment.
The focus of incongruity theories of humor is cognition and it does not focus on the social and emotional aspect of humor. The theory is based on the idea that the incongruity in the stimulus determines the extent to which an individual will perceive it to be humorous. Stimulus which is perceived to be humorous has the characteristics of being peculiar, incongruous, surprising, strange, bizarre, and funny.
Humor is the tendency to look at things from the mirthful or incongruous side. It is the quality that makes something laughable or amusing. Humor is the ability to perceive, enjoy, or express what is amusing or comical. It is the source of laughter and the catalyst of smiles. Humor is the spark that lights our eyes as well as the cause of tears that never grows old. Humor is a state of mind.
Humor and laughter can benefit every person's mental health. According to Melinda Smith and Jeanne Segal, who are the authors in the Help Guide Organization, " Laughter makes us feel good. And the good feeling that we get when we laugh remains with us even after the laughter subsides. Humor helps us keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss." They are right, laughter make us feel good even when the laughter subsides. The reason why it still feels good even when the laughter is gone is because our minds keep replaying the scenario over and over again so that our mind will be able to relax, reduce the stress and the tension that is in our mind and our body. They also said that humor helps us overlook
