John is unable to stay true to his culture because he has no direct interaction with people who share the same culture. He wishes that he could, but has no motivation because of the lack of people. When he hears the word “American” he thinks of the stereotypical America: the places, sports, people, and food. If he could live anywhere, he would live in Orange County because the size of the county is good, the weather is great, and it is close to everything: water, city, and attractions. He mentioned about how healthcare and education is affordable and you do not have to worry about it. Education is free at the University level as well. She came to the US because her parents wanted a better life and education for her and her older sisters. The primary cultural differences between American and Mexican society in her opinion is that families are not so open or close to each other. In American parents usually both work, so the children grow lonely not like in Mexico where usually the dad is the only one who works and the mother stay at home with the kids. Also, in America people take things for granted. Mexicans usually are grateful for the things that they have and get. When asked if religion was practiced differently in the US than in was in Mexico, she said that in the US there is more Christians but Catholicism is the same here and in Mexico. She says that it is treated and practiced the same here and there. Cultural differences are something that many disagree on because it is not “normal” to not be American and white. Skin color has nothing to do with where you belong. As we read in our book, many were discriminated simply because they “intruded” in the land. It did not matter if you were of white skin color, rich, with land, or anything, you came to a new land that was not yours so you were not welcomed. I have strong opinions on this topic because I have lived it every single day of my life. I see it happen firsthand and it is something so mind-blowing because you would not expect things like those to happen. The nerve of some people to do the things they do is amazing. Being able to spend time to speak with these individuals was a time that I will forever cherish because you never really know what that person has gone through. You never really know someone’s story until you take the time to sit down and talk with
