This paper will focus on what health care social work is. It will also discuss my personal self – reflection on how I will prepare to work with individuals, families, and communities affected by disease, illness and public health issues. Lastly a brief self- appraisal of my skills will be possessed along with my hope to develop to assist individuals, families and communities in a health care context. Attention must also be given to the struggles of this profession. Social workers had to deal with some unpleasant organizational practices. For example social work staff positions were redistributed, elimination, or combined with other job descriptions in order to maintain employment (Gregorian 2005 p3). In spite of these issues social workers continued to be gratified by their work in the health care profession. Health care social work is the method used to connect the client and the medical team. Health care social work allows professionals to work in a variety of settings and function in many different roles (Browne p20). It also bridges the gap between the health care social worker, the medical team and the client. This collaboration of abilities allows the team to address the needs of the client. Health care social work focuses on the well-being of the individual. It also strives to meet basic human needs, while paying special attention to the needs of individuals and communities. Threw advocacy you learn to express the student’s interests. Advocacy applies to all areas in the student’s life whether it’s in self-realization, self-expression, self-gratification, or their self-interest. Advocacy can be described as having hope and putting it into action when dealing with students. The Social Worker intern must have the power to endure the advocacy process. Social work pursues to meet the demands and addresses the changing profession of fighting for human rights, improving social policies, and practice. I agree with the Abramovitz article that we have to know and understand the history of the social work profession. If people go without learning and comprehending the past, people cannot make accommodations for the future. Knowledge of the past will keep history alive, it will guide workers and their efforts to reform. The past also helps society in understanding programs that did not work. Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.

Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.

The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. Social work is a questioned theory with different perspectives on what it is and how it should be practised. Social work helps people to deal with personal and social problems so that people can overcome or adjust to any personal difficulties. Social work is a combination of social stability and social change. Social stability promotes individual and social welfare and social change seek to change negative aspects of society. Values are implicit within the law and policy and these tend to reflect the values within society. Personal values can influence the way social workers interpret and implement their profession.
