This paper will focus on what health care social work is. It will also discuss my personal self – reflection on how I will prepare to work with individuals, families, and communities affected by disease, illness and public health issues. Lastly a brief self- appraisal of my skills will be possessed along with my hope to develop to assist individuals, families and communities in a health care context. Attention must also be given to the struggles of this profession. Social workers had to deal with some unpleasant organizational practices. For example social work staff positions were redistributed, elimination, or combined with other job descriptions in order to maintain employment (Gregorian 2005 p3). In spite of these issues social workers continued to be gratified by their work in the health care profession. Health care social work is the method used to connect the client and the medical team. Health care social work allows professionals to work in a variety of settings and function in many different roles (Browne p20). It also bridges the gap between the health care social worker, the medical team and the client. This collaboration of abilities allows the team to address the needs of the client. Health care social work focuses on the well-being of the individual. It also strives to meet basic human needs, while paying special attention to the needs of individuals and communities. Threw advocacy you learn to express the student’s interests. Advocacy applies to all areas in the student’s life whether it’s in self-realization, self-expression, self-gratification, or their self-interest. Advocacy can be described as having hope and putting it into action when dealing with students. The Social Worker intern must have the power to endure the advocacy process. The best stories of advocacy are celebrations of the student successes. These stories offer Social workers the courage to take risk on behalf of the student.
