How has guilt and anger affected avenues of reconciliation between the subsequent generations of perpetrators and victims?
The film Hitler’s Children was a documentary about the subsequent generations of the Nazi high command officials and how they deal with the legacy left behind by their ancestors, who were involved with the deaths of millions of people. In one scene Rainer Hoess the grandson of Rudolf Hoess is taking a tour of Auschwitz the concentration camp that his grandfather ran. During that time, he is does a Q&A with Jewish children and adults. In that there is an interesting exchange between him and Auschwitz survivor and young Jewish girl whose family was kept in and killed in the concentration camp.

With the divide of the Jewish people saying that they are Jewish first and German after or just living in Germany, there is a deep fissure that neither the children of the victims or the children of the perpetrators want to cross. Another reason is that the younger generation of Non-Jewish Germans are tired of being blamed for something that they had no part of and weren’t even born during(etd). With people, such as Eldad Beck who said he was not ready to forgive, there is an understanding that scars are still deep within the Jewish people. There is no one size fits all fix for the pain and the anger and the guilt that has come out of the holocaust. The anger and guilt has led to a divide and mistrust between the Jewish and German people that is deep. The “us” and “them” mentality that has been in German-Jewish relationship cannot be fixed or at least smoothed out with monuments and trials. The only way to fix it is to have cool head dialogue that can lead to understanding which is a lot easier said than done. There may never be true reconciliation between these to two people with so much dark history in their past, but there have been signs that it could one day

Hitler Youth was an organization that Hitler created for young children and teenagers of Germany to join to help him create solutions to Germany’s problems. In order to become a part of the Hitler Youth, one had to provide the proof that they were not in any way, shape, or form have a Jewish ancestry. This organization also gave some children an opportunity to rebel against their parents views of how the Hitler Youth organization was too militaristic for them. According to Graham, reconciliation is both “… a goal in the sense that it aims to restore relationships or to promote agonism or mutual tolerance, respect, and dignity […] [And] it is a process because it requires multiple modes, steps, stages, and transformations across all levels of society and amongst all stakeholders in a conflict” (Graham 2015). The life of a child in the 1930-1940 was not an easy life not if you were a Nazi, not if you were Jewish. These Children lost their childhood because of a war. Their shattered childhood creates stories that seem horrific to us today. Life as a child growing up in a Nazi family is probably easier than dealing with the problems that the Jewish children have. However, every Nazi child had to sign up for the Hitler Youth. The Hitler Youth was an organization to discipline young minds and preach to them about anti semitism. Hitler Youth was one of the largest youth groups in Europe at the time if parents did not have their children in it they would face fines or have charges of imprisonment. The Nazi regime brainwashed the kids, they made them aggressive and intolerable. In the group there was even a small ‘Gestapo’ that would make sure all the children were doing the correct task if not the ‘Gestapo’ would report this. This shows how much power the children were given. During the 1940s more boys were recruited to join the army or guard concentration camps and ghettos. Many extremely cruel and torturous things took place inside Auschwitz. Children, visibly pregnant women, and the elderly were often murdered upon arrival to Auschwitz. The Nazis did this because women and children were unable to endure the harsh labor that the Nazis wanted to put the Jews through, so they would inevitably be killed anyways. This is very cruel, not just because the women, children, and elderly were brutally murdered, but because this tore apart families within the camp; people had to live with the fact that their loved ones had been killed by Nazis. If children survived the initial separation, medical experiments were often performed on them by Dr. Josef Mengele, who was the main doctor in the camp, such as being put in pressure chambers, castrated or sterilized, and being frozen to death. This shows that the Nazis clearly didn’t care about how they treated their hostages. This proves one of the ways that the Nazi officers were inhumane and that the camp was a place filled with torture and death.

If this statement is considered true, then it's fair to say that during times of the Holocaust, the German society was at an all time low. Children during the Holocaust did not have a carefree childhood, like they should have, but instead were placed under strenuous conditions. They had to go through being separated from all family and friends, being chosen the first to go to, and in most cases a permanent loss of family members. The Holocaust was undoubtedly a horrific experience for everyone involved but for children it must have been traumatizing.

Jewish children went through a lot throughout the Holocaust- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Life was frightening and difficult for children who were in hiding during the rule of Adolf Hitler.
Adolf Hitler had a bad childhood that made him a bad man in his adult years. Hitler’s grandfather was jewish. He was a troubled child ever since he was 7. He had a bad childhood his grandpa used to beat him when he didn’t listen. That made him a bad man when he was older. He killed millions of jews and other people. He didn’t have a good family in his life growing up.He didn’t really have a mom she would rather spend time with men instead of her own son. Altho he was a bad man that killed millions and sent people to death camps. It wasn’t his fault he became an afol man. It was because of his childhood that started the camps the slaughter of jews and blacks and gays.

Not only were the children that were victimized in the Holocaust persecuted and murdered, but they were all stripped of their childhood. Children were not allowed to be children—they had to, for their own survival, be adults. The oppression of children because of race was a direct result of Hitler’s cruel policies and beliefs. In order to stifle the Jewish race from growing, the children were the first to be slaughtered at extermination camps (ushmm.org).
Every year or so, something happens in the media that brings us all back to the atrocities of World War II, and the German persecution of the Jews. It seems that the horrors of that time can only be digested and understood in small bites. How else can we personalize and comprehend a tragedy of that magnitude? Most of what we read and view in the media about the holocaust is a perspective from the Jewish experience. Recently, however, a question has been posed in regards to finding closure with that troubling piece of history from the German conscience. Can one German's experience reflect the tendencies of the entire country with regards to passion, denial, guilt, and finally justice?
Director Mark Herman presents a narrative film that attests to the brutal, thought-provoking Nazi regime, in war-torn Europe. It is obvious that with Herman’s relatively clean representation of this era, he felt it was most important to resonate with the audience in a profound and philosophical manner rather than in a ruthlessness infuriating way. Despite scenes that are more graphic than others, the films objective was not to recap on the awful brutality that took place in camps such as the one in the movie. Indeed, the narrative of war films has change throughout the years because the purpose of such films has evolved, especially those representing the World War II years and the aftermath. At the time of war, films were employed with diverse objectives for example to urge the public to support the war, to narrate the latest events, or to rebuild the image of the heroes. Most of the times the perspectives of films could vary depending on the country the film was produced in or which side of the story was being narrated. The plot of most war films might not be real, but they were necessary
