Globalization 3.0
Globalization has been long argued to be the cause of many problems within the world, while this is true it is also incorrect at the same time creating a paradox that takes careful analytical examination. In the world we live in today, we are in what some have called the third Globalization event of humanity. What is globalization and how does this affect the world as a whole? Through the analysis of text covered in class and outside readings, I will attempt to answer this and explain how globalization is affecting the world, and what it will mean in the long term for humanity and society as a whole.
Taking the example of globalization as used in the work of Mr. Barber we can see that the globalization that is occurring at this period in time is not the same as it has been in previous generations or even periods of advancement in prior terms of globalization. We are experiencing a corporatizing of the world as we know it in this new era of globalization, where in the past it was just a major joining of countries or ideas to better serve one another in information or economics it is now a corporate juncture to gather as much financial benefit as possible by eliminating all small independent companies and shops. We are experiencing a “McWorld” as Barber would say. This implies a joining of multinational organizations to further their profits by expanding and conglomerating into a monopoly simultaneously. The argument he provides is that there are two types of societies in the modern world, those who have joined onto the “McWorld” model and those who have not, “Jihad”. While the term Jihad has traditional implications in religion, Muslim, it is only defined as a struggle within oneself to b...

... decide whether we are content with the ability to have anything and everything at the touch of our fingertips as we lose our self-identity and freedoms to corporations and the powers they are able to control with lobbying and financing of brutal regimes. Alternatively, will we adopt a new way of living that is more ecofriendly, cultural independent, and ultimately is more difficult? I for one say we need less information technology and dependence of here and now life style and save our cultures, environment, and society as a whole by not engaging in big corporations purchases and more buy local policy to help out our communities before it is a scenario where in we face total annihilation at the hands of big governments and corporations that seek to undermind the public and destroy our planet for long term survival by bringing us all “A little closer together.”
As Thomas Friedman explains in his book “The World is Flat”, globalization started “when Columbus set sail, opening trade between the Old World and the New World.” Afterwards, “multinational companies went global for markets and labor,” and around the year 2000, individuals were the ones who got into the global world. Today, individuals and small groups easily enter the global market, collaborate, and compete - a process described by Friedman as “the flattening of the world.”
Globalization means different things to different people, so there is no one set definition. It is generally considered to be the spread of cultural, religious, political and economical systems, and symbolizes an increase of global communication, flow of ideas, and transfer of knowledge. Is also the spread of capitalism and Westernization. Globalization creates new opportunities and benefits, yet it can also bring suffering. Each region of the world—within continents, countries, and towns—experiences globalization in a different way. While one country may experience prosperity another may experience marginalization and impoverishment. This is because access of power is selectively given to certain groups. Globalization tends to produce success for the powerful at the expense of the
The creation of globalization isn’t new. It has been around as long as humanity has been mobile. In the most recent decades has the theory of globalization really started to gain traction. With the new modes of information transfer and logistical efficiency did globalization take off at an exponential rate. The increase and effects of globalization, whether good or bad, was brought to the public’s attention. This essay seeks to explore globalization in its various forms through critical analysis, and summarize with this author’s personal ideals.
“Globalization is not new, though. For thousands of years, people—and, later, corporations—have been buying from and selling to each other in lands at great distances, such as through the famed Silk Road across Central Asia that connected China and Europe during the Middle Ages” (What is globalization). For centuries many people and companies had invested in other countries even before the First World War. Globalization is a huge issue, because it affect on all the people around the world. It can affect in several of ideas, cultures, local and regional economics, societies, communication, and trade. Globalization can influence the environment of the people, security, and the exchange of the ideas between the countries. It distribute in a fast way, which emerge of new technologies, rise in free-trade activities, and markets worldwide acceptance.
Globalization is an ever present occurrence in today's day and age. this is directly tied to the fact that with increased technology and forms of communications, the world is no longer a place where one expects a response to letter in months instead of days. Nor is it a place where certain objects are unattainable due to the fact that they are made on the other side of the world. Globalization is defined as the circulation of people, technology, money and ideas around the world. However while the definition may be long the idea of globalization is broken up into seven key debates. Using these debates it is possible to discuss how globalization affects the lives of the people of the world.
Globalization, the acceleration and strengthening of worldwide interactions among people, companies and governments, has taken a huge toll on the world, both culturally and economically. It’s generating a fast-paced, increasingly tied world and also praising individualism. It has been a massive subject of matter amongst scientists, politicians, government bureaucrats and the normal, average human population. Globalization promoted the independence of nations and people, relying on organizations such as the World Bank and also regional organizations such as the BRICs that encourage “a world free of poverty” (World Bank). Despite the fact that critics can argue that globalization is an overall positive trend, globalization has had a rather negative cultural and economic effect such as the gigantic wealth gaps and the widespread of American culture, “Americanization”; globalization had good intentions but bad results.
Globalization is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and governments of different nations via international trade and investment, as well as informational technology. Development of world views, ideas, and products have helped it to become what it is today. Throughout Kelsey Timmerman’s book Where Am I Wearing?, it is presented as a major theme. In the book, there are many positive and negative impacts of globalization that are discussed. These include increases in competition among nations around the world, greater forms of culture and ideas being produced, an unbalance of economy between the rich and the poor, and many more. As well as the impacts of globalization being discussed, there are many more ideas such as how it affects daily life, how the positives and negatives outweigh each other, and who is harmed/benefited by it.
When the term “Globalization” is discussed, most academics, scholars, professionals and intellectuals attempt to define and interpret it in a summarized fashion. My main concern with this approach is that one cannot and should not define a process that altered decades of history and continues to, in less than 30 words. Global Shift is a book with remarkable insight. Peter Dicken rather than attempting to define the commonly misused word, explains Globalization in a clear and logical fashion, which interconnects numerous views. Dicken takes full advantage of his position to write and identify the imperative changes of political, economic, social, and technological dimensions of globalization.
"Rather than lead to economic benefits for all people, economic globalization has brought the planet to the brink of environmental catastrophe, social unrest that is unprecedented, economies of most countries in shambles, an increase in poverty, hunger, landlessness, migration and social dislocation. The experiment may now be called a failure." The International Forum on Globalization (IFG) here outlines the economic and social problems of which they accuse increased globalization of being the primary cause. Peter Jay outlines in his definition the areas that globalization impacts and this essay will proceed to attempt to evaluate the affect of this impact on two main areas. Firstly the economic consequences of increased trade liberalization will be examined in terms of effects on domestic and international markets, and secondly the impact will be examines in terms of affect on social issues such as inequality, poverty eradication and economic growth. These areas are commonly accepted as the most pressing global problems, and it follows that it should be the objective of any internationally endorsed economic system, to resolve these problems.
Globalization in this article has been described in many way As both a description of wide- spread, era-defining developments and a prescription for action, that has achieved a virtual hegemony and so is presented with an air of inevitability that disarms the imagination and prevents thought of and action towards a systemic alternative-towards another, more just social and economic order.(p. 8) Globalization, has also been described as the current restructuring and reshaping of the contemporary global economy, is a powerful transformative process that has acquired hegemonic status as a result of its operative logic and ideological connotation.
Today, a person in Nairobi can buy an Italian suit, the same person owns a German vehicle and can travel to another continent with ease. This is as a result of interaction and exchange of ideas, technology, information, services and goods with fewer barriers or in other words, people across large distances become more connected as the distance between them is shortened due to a phenomenon known as Globalization. Globalization has many effects and therefore it would take eons if not centuries to try and elaborate all of them, however it is imperative that we understand some of the effects of globalization and how it affects our society.
...o we can achieve our dreams in life: “we are now living in a world where time and space don’t matter anymore” just like J.Mittleman said. Globalization as we just learned is relative, whether it’s an opportunity or an exploitation depends on where you sit and how you look at the world. Kent, J., Kinetz, E. & Whehrfritz, G. Newsweek. Bottom of the barrel. - The dark side of globalization (2008/March24). David, P. Falling of The Edge, Travels through the Dark Heart of Globalization..Nov 2008. (p62)
Globalization in its various dimensions and principles and their impacts on nations and the sociological communities around the world have been a popular theme of research and discussion throughout the last two decades. In this essay I will be discussing a number of concepts and perspectives to understand how globalization has such an impact on the world we live in.
Globalization’s history is extremely diversified and began during the beginning of civilization. Now we live in a world that is constantly evolving, demanding people to use resources in locations that are very difficult to obtain certain resources. This could make it completely impossible to operate in these specific parts of the world. However, globalization allows people across the world to acquire much needed resources. Globalization creates the opportunity for businesses to take advantage and exploit the ability to take part of their business to a different country. Nevertheless, globalization is part of today’s society and will be involved in virtually all situations.
