Early experiences play an essential role on the development of children with and without disabilities (Ramey & Ramey, 2004 in Raver & Childress, 2015). Even if early intervention cannot eradicate the disabilities it can influence positively children’s development and diminish the difficulties that they face -due to the disability- during their interactions and daily activities (Raver & Childress, 2015). As Ramey & Ramey (2004) support the basis for the child’s learning development is built during the first five years. Therefore we can understand the importance that early intervention has during the first years of child’s life. Family-Centered Approach One of the basic principles in the philosophy of early intervention, according to the Part C of the IDEA is that the focus from the child is transferred to the family. The ecological approach includes the ‘’triad of child, caregiver and service provider’’ but also takes into account the impacts of policy and infrastructure (Hebbeler , Spiker and Kahn, 2012 in Votava & Chiasson, 2015). An ecological theory first proposed by Bronfenbrenner (1979), provides a framework for understanding the dynamic ways children’s contexts, influences their development and gives us a mandate for supporting the provision of nurturing and responsive care. Bronfenbrenner (1979) as cited in works done by Skinner (2012, p2), states the “ecological environment is conceived as a set of nested structures each inside the next like a set of Russian dolls” (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). This ecological systems theory was developed by Bronfenbrenner (1979) in the hope that it would explain how “everything in a child and the child’s environment effects how a child grows and develops” (Bronfenbrenner 1979 cited in Skinner (2012, p4). Overall both theorists want to establish the influence they believe will help these infants later as they progress over time. Either it is helping children create learned behaviors or instill protective factors through secure attachments with their primary caregivers. Although most general views are conflicting it is important to notice the main motivation is on the infant and their development. Both theorists attempt to compensate through the techniques of daycare they execute to ensure the child is receiving satisfactory care and developing appropriately. The views on how caregivers should react and interact contrast but both theories still look to protect and care for the child.
The developing person is effected by much more than their immediate situation, therefore Bronfenbrenner developed a theory that encompasses all of the surroundings that may influence a child and emphasizes the importance of the mutual relationships between each of these environments (Bristor, 2010). The interaction between surroundings is just as important as the environments themselves as these connections and transactions result in change and alteration in both the individual and their surroundings. Early Intervening Services is a hot topic and nonetheless relevant topic for us educators. Early Intervening Services is essential for all students to succeed. “The concept of early intervening services was introduced into public school systems with the implementation of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004” (Mire & Montgomery, 2009). Administrators need to adhere to the educational laws so that all children have the right to learn and grow with their peers in an educational setting. One change in the law is this emphasis of intervening early to meet the needs of children at risk of not succeeding in the classroom. A common thread with the research articles I’ve selected is this notion of effectiveness. Dickman’s (2007) formula and the provided description of IDEA: Early Intervening Services ( ) both support the non negotiable pieces of the puzzle in order to have an effective approach when providing Early Intervening Services. The research heavily emphasizes the importance of Early Intervening Services must be provided with scientific research-based, training to carry out the program, and informed environment. My beliefs and values about early childhood education is based upon understanding that all children are unique individuals who need a caring, nurturing, and secure environment in which to grow and develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. Children under the age of three are in critical stages of development, it is my belief that a quality child care environment will have a positive impact on a child’s development and make a significant difference in the life of a child and his or her family. My philosophy of early childhood education and the elements I believe are necessary in developing a developmentally appropriate child care environment is rooted in my views and beliefs about experimentalism, progressivism, multiculturalism, and the influence of philosophers such as Dewey, Piaget, Montessori, and Vygotsky. This development begins during infancy and can be supported through simple social games, emotional role model, and imitating an infant's facial expression and sounds. The importance of social-emotional development and toddlers makes an impact in a child life when these skills are developed starting in infancy. In this unit, I have described how important it is for every child to be treated as an individual. A child will learn, be confident and self-assured if they feel safe, happy, valued and accepted. It is important that every child has their individual needs met so that they are able to progress in their development. I have explained how important a key person’s role is in an early years setting in supporting children and their families. Activities should always be differentiated so that all children including children with disabilities and impairments are included in all activities. It is important that children are kept safe and secure to promote their physical and emotional well-being. All these factors put together are important when viewing every child as a unique individual.
