How Far Women's Rights Have Come

Gender equality in the United States, as well as many other areas of the world, has always been lacking on the women’s perspective. The idea that men are just all around better and more deserving caught and spread like a wildfire, this idea still has not been entirely diminished.(sv,sv) With hard work and determination, women have gone against the odds and stood together to prove their capability of being equal to the men in the United States. The rights of women from the past to the present have fluctuated tremendously. All that we have gained; all that we aspire to gain; show what we are capable of.(sv;sv;sv)
In the year 1769, colonies took advantage of the English system of property ownership for married women; meaning that women cannot own property in their own name or keep their own earnings. By the year 1900, every state will have passed legislation modeled after New York’s married women property act, which grants women the right to keep their own wages and to own property in their own name. In 1868, the National Labor Union pushed for equal pay for equal work, the concept that a woman must be paid the same as a man for doing the same, or equivalent job, within the same qualifications.(Women’s Rights Timeline)
As more time goes on, the demand for equality grows stronger and women believe that they can push for more. In the year 1869, the territory of Wyoming passes the first law in the nation, giving women over the age of 21 the right to vote. Between 1890 and 1994, women in 96 percent of all nation-states acquired the right to vote and seek public office.(Fransisco) A federal law is granted in 1872, female federal employees equal pay for equal work is enacted. Women have proven what they are capable of and have shown that they have what it takes to be independent and make a difference in the world. Without the help of any man, we as females will continue to strive to do and be the best that we can. The rights of women from the past to the present have fluctuated tremendously. The only thing left to do now, is to keep moving forward.
