I worked for an organization in NY called My Mother’s House and this organization was started by a women named Sister Elaine. This women was successful at leading and implementing change because she had a clear vision and was willing and able to do what she needed to do to bring this house to fruition. To give a little background on My Mother’s House, this was a house that was developed for children of incarcerated mothers who were separated from their mother due to incarceration. These children had no other people to provide for them and Sister Elaine decided that she was going to fight and get a building that these children could live in and be cared for by others in their mother’s absence. She faced a lot of opposition from Child and Family Services, politicians, and the community, because felons were deemed “bad people” in the eyes of many especially in the early 80’s when there was a get tough on crime regime.
