How do we remember?
Memory is a process we go through everyday. New information and old information is placed in our brain in order to function in our lives. The way we remember is said to be broken into there stages: encoding storage and retrieval. This essay will look at those three processes and explain how they are used in making a memory.
When I was in secondary school during the time it was coming up to exams. Creative subjects like art ,hospitality and music exams took place earlier than other subjects. One of the creative subjects I studied was music. It was in fourth year my class had a performance exam coming up. We were told to prepare two pieces of music to play out of the two instruments we chose at the beginning of the year.

Storage is where the information is saved in the brain. Storing information doesn 't take place one part of the brain but is split into different places. Research suggests “ Instead, different aspects of an event are likely to be stored in distinct brain regions - one region containing the visual elements of the episode, another containing a record of our emotional reaction a third area containing our conceptual understanding of the event and so on”. This means when our memory is stored the different elements of the memory are put in different places to record the memory. Thus the memory of practicing music was stored in different ways to help prepare of the exam. On the other hand there is little knowledge of how do we do remember parts our own memory. Although we do know that memories are not created immediately after we experience them. They need a time frame for the memory to become stronger and be fully entered in our brain. Research suggests the idea “During this time memory consolidation is taking place; this is a process spread over several hours, in which memories are transformed from a transient place and a fragile status to a more permanent robot state.” This suggests before the memory can be fully internalised we need to give time let the new information be fully stored implying this needs to processed into long term
Memory can be defined as the mental system for receiving, encoding, storing, organising, altering and retrieving information (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). Many a time one is able to remember something, example how to drive a car, yet they are unable to remember a mathematical formula for an examination. People vary in their ability to remember certain things, and research conducted has proven that even infants differ in their memory abilities (Fagan & Singer, 1963). It was discovered by psychologists that memory is not static, but rather it is influenced by ones internal factors and situational happenings to a large effect (Huffman, Vernoy & Vernoy, 1997). This essay will attempt to discover which method of study is most suitable, by listing and explaining various memory strategies, as well as indicating how each method will improve memory efficiency. The process of memory is made up of three operations. The first being Encoding, this is the conversion of information into a form which enables it to be retained in memory (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). The second operation is called Storage, this is the keeping of information until it is later needed. The third and final operation is known as Retrieval, and this is the recovering of information from Storage (Hoeksema, Fredrickson, Loftus & Wagenaar, 2009). These formerly mentioned operations each represent a stage in the process of memory (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2012).

I will be addressing two specific types of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory holds temporary information transferred from sensory memory or long-term memory. The brain takes in the information but does not store it for more than a few seconds. Short-term memory is the second step where the brain works on the information obtained from sensory memory. I believe every human mind has the ability to learn many new things. Memory hangs on three following stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Memory is the process of storage of data in the cerebral cortex area of the brain, and retrieval of the data through the reticular formation part of the brain (Baddely, 1992). Storage and retrieval of memory happen mainly by usage of the five senses which are; sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Memory is the tool we use to learn and think. We all use memory in our everyday lives. Memory is the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences. We all reassure ourselves that our memories are accurate and precise. Many people believe that they would be able to remember anything from the event and the different features of the situation. Yet, people don’t realize the fact that the more you think about a situation the more likely the story will change. Our memories are not a camcorder or a camera. Our memory tends to be very selective and reconstructive.
The human body is a complex structure. The brain being the most complex organ has the most work to do. The human memory consists of a process in which memories are stored and remembered. According to Intelegen Inc., there is this unique process of Memory in which the process only involves three stages. In the stages of this process, the memory is formed, retained, and retrieved. There are three stages of the five different types of Memory; the three stages are encoding, storage and retrieval.

Learning to tie shoes and ride a bike requires the encoding, storing, and retrieving of past observations of the procedure. With a lot of practice, children master these skills so well that they are able to remember them the rest of their lives. Memory is the storing of information over time. It is one of the most important concepts in learning; if things are not remembered, no learning can take place. As a process, memory refers to the "dynamic mechanism associated with the retention and retrieval of information about past experiences" (Sternberg 260). We use our memory about the past to help us understand the present. The study or memory in psychology is used in different ways, as well as there are many different ways to study how memory works in humans. In psychology there are many tasks used to measure memory, and different types of memory storages that human's use, such as sensory storing, or short term storing. There are also a lot of techniques that humans use to improve their memory, which they can use to learn, such as mnemonic devices. All these things can be classified as important issues in the study of human memory and ways of learning.
