1. How did you become a leader?
Richard Sotto: “I started working at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla in 2005 as an entry-level in the Patient Logistic team. Before taking this job, I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in the Philippines. I have been working at the Patient Logistic team for almost ten years. I was offered the lead position in this department in 2009 since the previous lead individual left San Diego. I am now a leader to eight members at a time during my shifts at work. I really do see this position as part of teamwork more than leadership.”
2. What do they feel are the most important competencies to develop in order to become a successful leader?

According to the Internet Center for Management and Business Administration (2010), “Theory Y is the higher level needs of esteem and self-actualization are continuing needs in that they are never completely satisfied. As such, it is these higher-level needs through which employees can best be motivated.” Richard sees work as a sense of maturity and responsibility for each task assigned to …show more content…
According to Bennis, leaders are not simply born, but made. Richard did not believe he was a naturally born leader but learned how to become one through experience. Richard portrays qualities and characteristics of a successful leader in an organization.
4. What leaders have you modeled yourself after and why?
Richard Sotto: “I really have not modeled myself after anybody. When I was offered the position, I did not know what to think. I knew that I wanted to stay in this department for a long time but I did not know what to expect from my co-workers. Due to the excessive workload and lack of compensation, I decided that I wanted to make sure that all of the employees were thought of. I wanted to make sure that I did not want to be an authoritarian leader but a leader that cared about everyone.”
5. Discuss major leadership challenges you have faced and how did you overcome
In a firm, management and leadership are important and needed. Leadership and management are similar. Actually, leadership and management are totally different. The leadership would influence the firm. The leader would have difference leadership styles to lead the subordinate.
How do senior leaders set your organization’s vision and values? The organizations vision and values are implemented through daily reinforcement of our objectives, therefore establishing guidelines in which to follow with reference to agency policies and directives. Through mentoring and daily interaction, senior leadership reinforce the agency goals and future commitments. Communication is a key factor in establishing the agency’s vision, therefore providing a guideline to achieving future aspirations. In order to effectively address current and future requirements that are essential in capturing the vision, senior leadership convey the agencies vision and values with our stakeholders through conferences, committee meetings and everyday
The most effective leaders know better than to try to be someone they are not. They should always be searching for opportunities to reinvest in their strengths. Leaders need to stay true to who they are and make sure they have the right people around them. The book says those who surround themselves with similar personalities are at a disadvantage to those who are secure enough to be surrounded by people who strengths will compliment theirs.
I chose this assessment because I believe is it important for all leaders to be self-aware of these skills, as all three are needed and continually improve these skills. From this assessment, I
Warren Bennis’ novel, On Becoming a Leader, is the book I was able to read. Bennis worked years on this novel constructing it off of one of his former creations. Finally, in Cambridge, Ma Bennis published his story by Perseus publishing. Throughout this book he centers around the search to understand exactly how leaders are made. Bennis uses a unique approach to portraying his opinion. This is not an ordinary “how to” book on becoming a leader. Nor is it an autobiography of one’s personal experience. Bennis was a teacher and student all his life, he has never run a country or even a company. Bennis is not directly reciting his own experiences as a leader. This paper outlines Bennis’ basic thoughts, theories, and his contributions to the field
Exemplary leaders have a profound and positive influence on the commitment and performance of their followers. In order to achieve and sustain success exemplary leaders have to effectively communicate a clear vision, cultivate a team environment and establish cooperative goals. Coach Boone displayed several actions and behaviors that represent The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.
There tend to be a variety of concepts regarding how, as well as what should undergo consideration when developing leadership in individuals. Scholars have different suggestions on the kind of approaches that should get observed during the practice. As a result, this paper seeks to unravel various forms of leadership approaches, as well as suggesting the best theory that should be in use when creating a perfect leader. Additionally, the work will establish ways of determining the effectiveness of a leadership program.
Reviewing this chapter as whole, I noticed that there is no fixed approach mentioned towards a leadership style, rather it suggests that range of different leadership style must be adapted based on the situation. Furthermore, I found out that this chapter lacked some useful information which should have been discussed e.g. it did not emphasis much about leadership styles and strategies in a service industry. However, some distinctive traits successful leader must have were highlighted such as good interpersonal skills, sociability and dominance. Some philosophers believe that leaders are born as a leader which perhaps I don’t really agree to, not all successful leaders were born as a leader. Leadership style can however be adapted in response to situation and needs of the business environment.
Other attributes of a leader are selflessness, knowledge, organization, humility, and trust. Perhaps the most difficult part of being a leader is knowing that each decision you make will h...
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
My biggest personal leadership failure occurred earlier this year when I worked at Einstein Bros Bagels at Coffman Union. I stayed there from January until April making and serving bagels to customers. However, I had the morning shift, the busiest period of the day. Long lines would form every time I was there, and sometimes I couldn’t catch up. One day in April, my co-worker, a veteran making bagels, was absent, and someone who didn’t have as much experience replaced her. What followed was a mess. My team chemistry with the replacement was dreadful, and a ton of people had to wait a while for their orders. My manager saw the incident, and after my shift was over, he gave me the option of leaving my job. I accepted, but my self-confidence was in a state that was beyond repair. It was one of the first times that I felt I let others down with my work performance. I learned that I shouldn’t expect to be great at everything and that I should analyze my weaknesses before taking on something challenging.
Leader should have the shared responsibility and collaborative quality. For example, instead of making the strategy alone, he will gather the idea of all brilliant workers to increase the productivity of the organisation.
One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. Utilizing the research conducted by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, I have created a leadership plan that would apply to the Admission Department at Texas Wesleyan University.

Maxwell maintains that the leading leader is born with leadership qualities and has seen leadership modeled throughout life. The leading leader has learned additional leadership skills though training and practices self-discipline. The “learned leader” is described with the same characteristics of the “leading leader” with the exception of “being born” with leadershi...
