During the length of the course, one of the main ideas we learned about is that dialogue can shape the story that we visualize. The most impactful instance of this is when we had the class split up into two groups and read the same story but the questions asked at the end of it were different. It was almost unbelievable that we had read the same story because of how different the answers to the question were. On one side of the room they were very positive and optimistic about the future of the company, and the other side they were pessimistic and untrusting of the company and returning CFO.
This was a main thing we kept in mind when we were interviewing the Caresource employees and we were going through the questions with them. The way the questions were worded almost made it hard to answer them with a negative answer. This made the conversation between us and the Caresource employees informative about strengths and weaknesses without creating negative emotions.
We collected our information on the printouts of the questions we asked and then compiled that into a big summary. We made sure that we read a couple other interviews from the other group members, and then extracted the main themes that we thought were the most prominent. Most children experience agony and hope as they face the struggles of sibling rivalry throughout their childhood. This situation has been experienced by children, of whom may or may not have siblings, for hundreds of years. Several stories represent this crisis, including the Biblical story of Abel and Cain which was written over 3000 years ago. Abel of whom was forced to be Cain’s ash-brother. Cain had developed an intense feeling of jealousy of Abel when his offering to the Lord was rejected while Abel’s was accepted. This caused him great agony, but he wasn’t the only one. The fairytale “Cinderella” encompasses the ideas of sibling rivalry as well as the agonies and hopes that correspond with it.
Brother is selfish because he is not concerned about how the rigorous training is negatively affecting Doodle. “… Doodle began to look feverish, and Mama felt his forehead. At night he didn't sleep well, and sometimes he had nightmares, and I touched him and said, "Wake up, Doodle. Wake up.” Even though Brother is lucid of the fact that the training is making Doodle unwell, he continues to press Doodle to train harder. Every day, Brother makes Doodle train, even if he does not wish to. Brother is someone that Doodle always looks up to. Brother uses this to persuade Doodle that he must not be different.
It’s amazing how much we learn about people from what they say. One way to achieve this is through carefully constructed dialogue. Work to create dialogue that allows the characters’ personalities and voices to emerge through unique word selection and the use of active rather than passive voice.
“In my mind, they seemed happy together, in the bantering, ironic manner of sitcom couples, and their arguments seemed full of comedy, as if a laugh track might ring out after their best put-down lines.” (p.54). It’s all a part of an elaborate fantasy he’s created in order to ignore reality. There are also times in the story where the Narrator’s doesn't comprehend the situation--at one point he describes his mother’s drunkenness, “She looked sad, and for a moment lost her balance slightly as she reached down to run a palm across my cheek” (p.59-60). Whether his lack of comprehension is because of his youth, or intentional is unknown. His relationship with his brother is also indicative of a troubled youth. In the imaginary city, the Narrator’s brother is his “nemesis”. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue--there’s nothing strange about sibling rivalry, however, in this case the Narrator never really grows out of it. Most people can agree with the statement that growing up with siblings has impacted their development and personality. This topic has been researched by psychologist and sociologist for decades; which has provided both positive and negative outcomes of growing up with siblings. Children can benefit from growing up with siblings because they can learn from their siblings, gain social skills, and their siblings may become a valuable asset in one’s life.
