For decade’s individuals, companies, and organizations have spent an unprecedented amount of money on researching, molding, modeling and working to define what a leader is and what characteristics make successful leaders. With all the research, there is not a quick answer or even full agreement as to what makes an individual an effective leader. An effective communicator will have a technique receive to feed back. In successful, open communication there must be a way for the team to give valuable feedback. The leader must employ timely and mutual feedback to gain trust. It is important for the leader to be willing to listen to criticism from employees. Mayfield, J & Mayfield, M. (2002)
Barriers to communication. For each of the skills needed for effective communication there is a known barrier to prevent it. It has been my experience that listening, active listening is the most common barrier to communication. This is a learned skill and that takes practice to be efficient. In many of the organizational meetings, I am involved with; there is a lot of noise that prevents actively listening. These meetings rarely take into account the whole audience, environment or a valuable feedback loop. We live in an era of communication challenges. It is an age of increasingly scarce management and education to the markets of tomorrow. To solve this problem, to improve and restore the competitive edge of business, I recommend teaching leadership as well as organization. We need to move beyond the simplistic and boring, everyday organizational skills commonly taught in core courses in business schools. Important as these skills are, we need to redirect our foci towards the essential ingredient required to put these skills to work – leadership. As Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus have expressed it, “The problem with many organizations…is that they tend to be over managed and under led. There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important.” “To manage” means “to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge or responsibility for, to conduct.” “Leading” is “influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion.” Other characteristics include: motivating and inspiring individuals, providing direction and vision, earning the respect of others, turning talent and efforts into results, and being an excellent communicator and listener.
Being a good communicator is one of the most essential skills a manager can possess both professionally and personally. In fact, organizations could not exist without some form of effective communication (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015, p. 254). The ability to share an idea by forming a thought in your mind, encoding that message, and transmitting the message via a chosen channel is only part of the process. For good communication to exist, the message needs to be heard. This happens when the receiver realizes a message is being sent through all the noise, decodes it, and understands it. A communication that is received and understood should generate an action. Feedback helps clarify the message between the sender and receiver (McShane & Von Glinow, 2015, pp. 255-256).
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented.
