The CEO of a public relations firm, Ben Williams, is concerned with recent surveys showing a decline in employee satisfaction with communication from the top down. Williams currently communicates to his staff only when there is a problem or he believes he needs to make changes. The information he passes down to his team only includes the process that need completed and he fails to elaborate on why said changes are being implemented. His team often finds out about projects from other employees long after they have already been put into action. Williams soon realizes this communication style is not working and he must aim to improve communication between himself and his team.
Opening Communicating Channels to Establish Common Goals
To grow as an effective leader, Williams must adapt additional communication strategies into his current style. Williams did not realize his current leadership style lacks in building trust and makes it hard for employees to understand and buy into a process. Williams only states the way he wants a task completed, not why. Williams must learn to open up to his team about the ultimate goal not just how he wants the job completed. By opening up to his team on the importance of the task at hand and giving the option to chime in on how to achieve the task, his team will have a sense of buy in. When a team is “unable to act on their own initiative, they lose their sense of ownership and feel little accountability for their performance” (Goleman, 2000). Embarking in common goals and allowing the team input on their projects can increase employee’s sense of pride and responsibility.

Williams saw the need for improvement and acted on transforming his communication strategies. By changing the means of how he communication, he was able to distribute needed information to his team in a timely manner. Being informed allows his team to gain trust in his leadership. Having the information and gaining trust allows his team gains responsibility and ownership within the process and their productivity improves. Williams learns communication is a two way street, Williams gave his staff a voice, which enables him to be well informed of their needs and concerns. This bond has allowed Williams and his team to evolve their communication methods and grow into a more well rounded team.
