What is the idea of communication? Today we are constantly posting up everything we see in the world or sharing how was our day; good or bad? Communication gives us countless of information to explore more than what we are surrounded by, but can it actually break us apart with what is real? In today’s society we live in a world where we are constantly connected in the social media world at times it could actually disconnect us from the real world and miss what we are surrounded by; and at times can bring us together. Before we probably wouldn’t know if the person you were texting laughing or just being plain, with the emoticons it gave you an understanding. Most of the time when we don’t use these emoji people might feel offended that maybe the person that you texting might not want to talk to you. This where the emotions disconnect because one is not being clear with the other. However, online communication gives us these opportunities to go beyond digitally, but is it human for us to stay closely connected, that we forget what is going on in the real world? I feel that it isn’t making anything better. Social media is making us forget how it is to communicate with one another, and soon we won’t have social interaction, everything will be handled by technology. Although, I feel that social media blocks us from emotions why? Because majority of the time we tend to disconnect the way we feel by covering ourselves up with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat, and I feel is because we want to get attention of others by sending submittal messages to get somebody to notice. Instead of picking up the phone and calling someone whenever we feel like something went wrong or to just catch up and meet up in person. We just use our phones and think that it is better. Social Media is used daily by what seems like everyone, and with all of its advances it is here to stay. While surfing the seas of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etc... I am frequently overwhelmed with advertisements for a variety of companies. Social media for advertising got so attracted that people forgot to meet in physically and think that way to communicate, can be done online especially youngster. This puts into question how much money companies are spending to advertise on websites, instead of say television or on actual paper. According to Business Insider, US social media advertising will spend more than $8.5 billion this year and nearly double that by 2018. An article from Marketingland.com said social media advertising grew 57% from 2013 to 2014. Did you know that an emoji is only one-sixth the emotional support in comparison to a hug? Obviously technology isn’t as socially supportive as we think. Technology leaves little time for others, and does not let people form more profound relationships with others. Technology makes us less sociable daily, killing our friendships.
Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms have become one of the central activities in human affairs. Used by people around the world promoting communication, social media gives scope to everyone to exhibit their ideas and thoughts. The plethora of social platforms is a revolutionary invention that is changing the way of how people moderate and communicate with others in their daily lives. Although many people admire this revolutionary concept, it can be argued that it has a negative impact on society. Extensive usage of social media can cause addiction, affecting productivity, and also reduce the level of human interaction, which in turn leads to isolation. Social media is correlated to many of the issues that revolve feminism and mental illness through anthropology, sociology and psychology.
When reading a message online, the tone of the text can be interpreted in any way since there is no way to tell how the sender meant it. This can lead to arguments and major miscommunications between two people. In Catherine Steiner-Adair’s book that she wrote with Teresa H. Barker, The Big Disconnect, she interviews many kids and teens on their experiences with social media. When she asked teens about communicating through social media she found that, “not having to see the other person’s response made it easier to stay connected to their own reactions without feeling silenced or activated by the other person’s visceral and verbal reactions” (Steiner-Adair 202). While communicating online does allow people to think more thoroughly about what they say, this is not realistic.
This is how author Roger Scruton describes the effects of social media on relationships. While young people thirst for validation and acceptance by others, the way in which they receive these things does not seem to matter as much. Instead of one having their personal opinions heard by those closest to them, many broadcast their beliefs to their social media followers without thinking twice. They do not expect a special response from a particular person or for a conversation to come of the comment; in most cases a like, favorite, or retweet will do. It is impossible for meaningful conversation to come from status updates, short text messages or 140 character tweets. For those living in previous generations, letters and phone calls were the only ways one could communicate with one loved ones. While today’s methods allow us the instant gratification that we have come love, significant communication can be lost among a sea of “OMGs” and “LOLs.” When our parents and grandparents liked someone, they had to build up the confidence to go up to them and outright tell them. Today’s young people count on winking or kissing face Emoji to sufficiently get their point across. As a result of social media, young people are loosing their ability to communicate effectively with others when they are in person. One general conclusion that can be drawn from a close look at communication theories is that communication shapes one's reality by enhancing life experiences. Communication is the shared process of using messages to construct and contribute in social reality. The parts of our lives that we derive the most meaning from are our individual identities, relationships, organizations, communities, cultures, and ideas, which are all intertwined through communication. Each of these is a part of social reality that emerges through social interaction, thus enhancing our life experiences. Alexis Ohanian once said that "Being effective at social media, whether for business or personal use, means capturing people who have short attention spans. The study proposes a conceptual framework, consisting three relevant theoretical foundation applicable for any type of social media-networking capacity, image transferability, and personal extensibility. The paper concludes the three factors provides opportunity for advertisers to reach their audience more effectively.
