Computers, Ipads, and cell phones are just some of the advances in technology. These inventions have made human lives easier; however, they hinder the unity of families and a person's concept of actuality. Out of the recent advances in portable electronics, cell phones seem to be the product people rely on the most. Upon accessing this device, people forget the person who is physically with them and their current environment. An in-depth phone conversation distracts a human from his or her surroundings, and people tend to bump into one another causing potentially dangerous situations. This behavior is unacceptable because it is not only rude but harmful to others. People should use cell phones sparingly and be alert when they are accessing this device. Mankind needs to rethink the excessive use of technological devices and reevaluate what these gadgets are doing to personal lives of individuals. All progress in portable inventions is making existence easier for citizens; however, the manner in which a cell phone is being utilized is having adverse effects on society as a whole.
The mental zone into which a person delves when he or she is on a cell phone pulls a person away from physical reality. A lot of citizens have come to regard phones as an extension of themselves. Most humans use these products in restaurants, cars, movie theaters, buses, trains and even in restrooms. The best thing for people to do is excuse themselves when going to the restroom because it is inconsiderate to talk to another person during something that is private. According to a 2005 survey by BBDO Worldwide, “Fifteen percent of Americans have interrupted sex to answer a cell phone” (Leo). It is amazing that human beings would throw their partners aside to answer a phone. People do not need to disturb a face-to-face conversation to answer a call. Human interaction takes precedence. The introduction of a law could be put into place to limit the use of cell phones in public places, and it should be deemed unacceptable to use a cell phone in such settings as weddings, funerals, movies, classrooms, restrooms, churches, and libraries. If a call is so important it has to interrupt a person in the above situations, this person needs to excuse his or herself to a more private area or return the call at a more convenient time.

Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. Without a doubt, cell phones are going to be a part of our world, but it is the responsibility of every cell phone owner to exercise self control and understand that a cell phone is nothing more than a device.
Today in the Twenty-First century we have surpassed many technological advancements and excelled far past what we would have ever thought. One of our greatest technological advancements is the thing we hold in our hands everyday, our cell phones. Sometimes we don't realize just how much our phones can distract us from our lives. As a generation glued to our phones us teenagers send an average of 3,339 texts per month. In Randy Cohen's essay, “When texting is wrong” he states how we are overcome by texting and how it damages our social and personal lives.
In the article “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves”by Christine Rosen published by W. W. Norton in 2004, she explains about how technology came about and is now taking over today’s world. Just by walking down the street today, it is visible that in everybody’s hands there is a
A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.
A social issue regarding the effect of incivility is the constant use of cell phones. When in public, people who are on their cell phones may be “so wrapped up ‘in their own little bubbles’ that they don’t even realize they’re blocking a sidewalk or holding up a line” (qtd. in Clay). This phenomenon is due to the fact that a human’s attention has a limited capacity and a selective nature (based on the research of Hermann von Helmholtz) and therefore, when their attention is on their phone, they’re “b...
In the essay “Our Cell Phones, Our Selves” written by Christine Rosen, the author presents a brief history on how cell phones were introduced into society and how this artifact changed people’s interactions in the physical space. Rosen describes the first cell phone that appeared in 1983 as “hardly elegant,” big and expensive (458). Cell phones at that time were mainly used by important and affluent people. However, seven years later, cell phones became smaller and affordable provoking a big change in society. This big technological advance did not only affect the United States, but the entire world.
The telephone is one of the greatest inventions of all time. Without a telephone, life as we know it today, would be much more difficult and time consuming. Some of life’s activities might even be impossible. Talking to loved ones that live far away, changing work schedules, making appointments to have the utilities turned on in our homes, paying the bills, and calling 911 are all actions that can be completed in the blink of an eye, by using a telephone. Ironically, improved communication, the biggest asset to having a phone has been significantly destroyed by the use of the newest technologically advanced cell phones. Furthermore, despite all of the wonderful benefits there are to having a telephone, the transformation and advanced technology of the new and improved “smart” mobile phone has created a world geared toward speed and quantity; while on the other hand promoting haste, less than acceptable customer service, dreadful family relationships, impatience, poor spelling, and memory problems.
People may think that digital devices have changed our life a lot, and they can use these digital devices to communicate with each other immediately at the same time. It is true that digital devices are more convenient and faster than traditional communication methods like writing letters. However, these digital devices will influence interpersonal relationships, and people do not know how to talk effectively. Many people spend more much time on digital devices than friends, relatives, and children. Personally, I have dinner with my friends on every Sunday night, but some of them always look at their cell phones while we are eating or sharing interesting stories. It is very impolite, and my interest in this dinner gradually decreases. Moreover, there is a phenom...
Cell phones have created one of the biggest social changes in human history. We as people have gone from speaking face to face, to call each other on the phone occasionally, to today where we all carry a computer in our pockets that can do anything you want it to. We as people have gone from being social with one another to posting things on social media. It’s crazy to think that just 25 years ago you couldn’t communicate with someone else across town without being at home using the telephone. Cell phones have changed us socially in a drastic way. It has changed the way we communicate with one another, it has changed how we interact with others, and it has changed the way we act in public places and social gatherings.
“Can you remember the last time you were in a public space in America and didn’t notice that half the people around you were bent over a digital screen, thumbing a connection to somewhere else?” (Fredrickson, 2013, pg. 1). In a world today where sending a text message containing the message “I luv you,” is equally powerful to that statement said in person to your significant other. Today’s generation is surrounded by the constant need to have technology and mainly cell phones at your fingertips. Gone are the days when people would talk to one another whilst standing in line, now it is all about having and using your cell phone to pass the time. Mainly, cell phones are a handicap to this and they inhibit the ability for a male to communicate with a female or vice versa, leading to the foreign territory of intimate relationships. The main reaction to this is saying that technology has shaped this motive and texting is a way of life. One can beg to differ saying that there just needs to be a new understanding of when, where and how much a cell phone is used around other people. This understand standing starts with coming up close and personal with why it happens. It can be said that this boils down to it being a physical distraction, emotional distraction, and a handicap to society’s ability to have interpersonal communication.
As the technology of cellphones advances, the easier it becomes to communicate and maintain relationships globally, however, these ubiquitous devices lead to the possibility of diminishing close family relationships. In this essay I will explain that the way cellphones have impacted family relationships is, in fact, a genuine controversy. First, I will explain the overall debated situation, then I will express how valuing either technology, tradition, or communication all lead to different, mutually exclusive views on the influence of cellphones in family relationships.
Cell phone use by motorist is dangerous and can cause accidents resulting in deaths and injuries. Furthermore, Nations and states should take the lead in outlawing this dangerous act. Prohibition of Cell phone use by motorists globally is the solution. Since a driver cannot concentrate fully on driving while making a phone call, he remains as impaired as someone who drives while intoxicated. In addition, imagine the risk one puts himself in when he is being driven by a drunk driver .This is the same risk that a motorist speaking on phone faces. If lawmakers are serious about addressing the increasing number of deaths related to motorists using cell phones. Hence, they should ban use of cell phone use by motorist.
