Identify the type of client you would be most likely to work (e.g., children, adolescents, college students, adults). What personal characteristics and skills are needed by the counselor to be effective with this group? The age group that I would most like to work with are high school students because this era was a major turning point in my life toward success. This is credited to the excellent and hard working faculty members. Now it is my goal in life to become a school counselor in order to make a difference in young peoples’ lives similar to the way it was made on me. A counselor working with any population will have to be good listener, accessible, and an excellent communicator. A high school counselor will have to possess these trait along with a being able to be an authoritarian figure when the situation calls for it. Kids in high school often make poor decisions. I have not worked with clients in a formal counseling setting. However, I know the importance of clients taking assessments to gain a better understanding. For example, if the client is having difficulty selecting a career, I would have the client take a career assessment to determine client strengths. Then, the client can use the evaluation to research jobs that would allow the client to use their strengths.
I received the pleasure of interviewing two school counselors, Mrs. Jean Harmon and Mr. Devon Herrick. I was excited about interviewing school counselors within the Chicago land area. Despite many negativities spoken about the Chicago Public School (CPS) system, I desire to work within CPS. I’ve heard many pros and cons of working at a selective enrollment school, compared to a public charter school. By interviewing these two individuals, I assumed that I would get a snapshot of a potential work day for a school counselor. Mrs. Harmon is a school counselor at King College Preparatory high school. Mr. Herrick is a personal counselor at Urban Prep Charter Academy- Bronzeville campus. It was interesting in learning about the daily responsibilities,
...sion and understanding of each and every one of the students they are assigned to help and it requires a personal relationship that is trusting and also professional. It requires a lot of multi-tasking with counseling collage, personal/social, and academic, along with having to do classroom checks and student checks to see how your students are doing in each class are are they being successful to all there capabilities. For a typical high school counselor the work hours tend to be 7 to 9 hours Monday through Friday when working in a traditional high school time schedule. Every counselor has there own way of approaching everything they do with there students because its a very personal hands on relationship with each and every student. But most counselors are closer with the seniors of every year because of all the collage advising them through the entire process.
As a professional counselor, I hope to accomplish the development of children academically, personally/socially, and with career development. I strive to be the professional school counselor who implements the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and develop programs and provide responsive services that are all designed to promote the optimal development of their students. To lay the groundwork for this work, I will need to use leadership and communication skills, collaboration strategies, and advocacy skills. We are essential members of education teams that address all aspects of student
Individuals’ perceptions of their life/worth have the power to control the goals that they can carry out and meet. Every day we are learning new things and everyone has his/her own unique ways of learning. My strong desire to help students with their academic, personal, and social needs make me a strong candidate as a school counselor. While completing my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Program Administration I learned a great deal about myself. I have a passion for learning and want to share and express that love for learning with students. I feel that the Master of School Counseling program provides a direct path to my career goals of helping students to comprehend subject matter while learning to love learning as I do. Not only will
A professional school counselor is skilled and trained to use his/her best judgment when it comes to students’ rights and confidentiality. The counselor accomplishes the above by expressing empathy, developing discrepancies, going along with resistance and supporting self-efficacy. Moreover, the counselor guides the client toward a solution that will lead to permanent posi...
My college career started with me just going to school to take PE classes while neglecting my main required core classes and always pushing them aside without any urgency to succeed in finishing school. A couple of years would go by with little to no progress and lack of motivation to succeed in finishing my college required classes. Soon landing a career oriented job and finding myself dropping out of college to focus on my work career. From this point and time I would learn the importance of school and the value of finish college through my years of experience at work. This awareness of value in finishing college would motivate me to want to go back to school. Soon I would find myself at American River College counseling center. Here I was coming back to school unsure of myself and in an environment where I previously never found success in school. After meeting with my counselor I was recommended to take a college success course. This course is part of a program called the Accelerated College Education (ACE). Because I was able to learn along the years being out of school the importance of gaining an education I gained a new motivation for school, signed up for this ACE program, and enroll in the college success
The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
This paper will discuss the following 4 Core Functions of a Counselor: Case Management, Client Education, Crisis Intervention, Referral and their primary purposes.
Forming a counseling group may seem simple, but it’s not. A “major issue in putting a group together is screening it for potential members” (Gladding, pg. 212). The reason it can be a complicated task to complete is because members are not always volunteers. Screening members for a “group counseling session, is a three step process” (Gladding, pg. 212). We’ll discuss how these steps are an important component of having a successful group.
The client should be honest with the counselor, discuss concerns, and listen to the counselor. I would expect students to trust in their abilities to make their own choices get in touch with their feelings. I believe client roles are resourceful in helping people take more responsibility for their lives and solve their own problems. I believe the client is fully capable of fulfilling their own potential for growth.
At the beginning of the school year, the counselors had a scope and sequence they followed with the areas of; transitions, character and diversity, personal safety/wellness, and careers. The scope and sequence is modeled after the WCSCM’s Academic Standards for School Counseling covering the three domains of academic, personal/social, and career development. The standards help answer the question, “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program.” After each description of a lessons plans, was an explanation of each content standard which correlated with the lesson. While at my internships, I assisted with lesson planning and facilitating guidance lessons on careers, transitions or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), as well as, groups on character development, new student groups, and diversity. The WCSCM is completely embedded in the counseling programs at both of the districts I worked
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
A guidance counselor is an important element in the formation of post high school plans. Counselors offer an outlet of information that should be used by all students. There are numerous ways for the counselor to approach post high school planning.
