Walking into school being scared of what might happen is something no student should need to think about. The things some students have to see is unthinkable. Seeing your best friend or teach die can scar a child forever. Unfortunately many students witness a school shooting and it can never leave their minds. Many students and the community do not have a sense of protection due to the lack of policies that are in place or simply because many policies are not being followed. Because of this students are stepping up. They are figuring out ways to keep themselves and their peers safe. If there is policies in place then why are some schools not following them? Why do the students have to think of plans that is the administrations job? Many reasons are unclear about why school shootings even takes place but there is examples and research to give a little insight about who and why. Past school shootings has required many new policies, most of them are not being followed because lack of funds and laziness, why are these schools not being proactive by preparing for future shootings, not being checked up on to ensure policies are being followed and how can they be prevented. Everyone is aware of a school shooting when it occurs. It does not matter how far it might have happened, the local news will be sure to report every available detail. People remember what a worldwide problem this is and they immediately want to change things. After months go by they tend to forget and nothing gets fixed. Children’s safety should be the most important thing to the administration. It will save lives and also make the students feel safer. No parent wants their children to feel uncomfortable at school. The history of school shootings has shown an increase in mass school shooting. The very first known school shooting in the United States occurred on July 26, 1764 in present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania. As part of the Pontiac's Rebellion, four Lenape Native Americans entered the school house and started shooting, killing the schoolmaster Enoch Brown and about nine students. Only two students survived the massacre (“History”). Since the 1700s the United States society has changed in many ways. Schools have become more than just one room school houses and each grade has its own teacher. Furthermore, the problem of school shootings has not decreased but rather increased over the years. It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
From 1980’s till now, there are has been many school shootings. Many researchers have made many hypotheses as to why these occur. The most tragic shooting took place in Sandy Hook Elementary. 2. I believe that we should prevent shootings from happening in schools because schools are meant to be a safe education environment for students and faculty. One of the most eye opening school shootings was on April 20, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado. Thirteen students were killed and twenty wounded in the middle of the day while attending school at Columbine High School. Two armed students opened fire just outside the building, then moved inside and gunned down more students and faculty members. This rampage lasting for just under 45 minutes. In recent years, tragedies have been visited upon schools across the country. From Kentucky to Oregon to Colorado, the notion of schools as safe havens has been shattered by the sound of gunfire. These acts are not limited to any geographic regions or family backgrounds, nor do they have a single catalyst. Those who have committed such heinous acts have done so for different reasons, at different times, in different schools. Some school are making their school a gun free zone. However, it is true that some people try to attack gun free zone because they know that no one has a gun to kill them back. Even people call the police, it takes time for the police to come and shooting does not take that much time to kill people. To solve this problem I think the campus safety should carry guns. Also, teachers may have a right to have guns, too. When the shooter comes into the classroom the teachers are the only adult that could protect the students. Thousands of people are affected by the lack of school safety in schools across the nation. Students everywhere are attending schools that are more dangerous than expected. This is a growing concern everywhere, and schools need to improve, or else they are prone to being unsafe. Whether it is building, drill, concussion, social, or technology safety, schools need to improve to lower the risk of an incident.

This has caused many parents to worry about the well-being of their children while they are in class. This has also led to an increase in questions and concerns by parents and guardians. Many people have asked, “What are you doing about safety and security on my child’s campus” (Schimke 2). School violence is the cause of elevated worry and fear for their children, and school districts should enforce better security.
