How a Principal models vision
The principal of a school is tends to be the face of that institution. They are the key representative of the school district and the one person that has to mesh the multiple personalities that make up the school. Principals have to then make sure that parents buy into the academic progress and direction that the schools needs to and wants to go in. Principals are most likely the one entity that has the majority of all the facts that would be need to make decisions. Thus, the principal needs to make sure that they model the vision and mission of the school to the teachers and staff, community, parents, and students.
The principal has the very important job of modeling their vision to the teachers and staff of the school. This group of people makes up the teachers, office staff, cafeteria staff, custodians, librarians, and technology staff that are the front line people of the schools. This group has the direct contact with the community, parents, and students. Thus the vision that the principal wants to see has to start here. These people need to have a buy in of the vision and thus they will be the hard sell of that vision. They will want to understand the “why” behind the vision so that they can gain a greater understanding of the importance of the overall vision. I believe that once this group of people sees how the overall vision will improve the quality of the school and the education of the students, then they will see how important their stake is in the school system. I have worked for two principals at Wahlert Catholic over the course of fifteen years. Both principals have had their strengths and weaknesses but they differed greatly in how they used vision. The first principal w...

...ged in the things that are going on in the students’ activities and events. I think this is where principals to attend events and competitions, depending on the level of the principal. From a high school perspective, I believe that the more a principal is present at events, the more credibility they can gain from the students. This does not mean that they have to attend everything, but rather they need to attend a well round collection of events. My mentor does a great job of attending athletic events and engaging with students about their competitions. The only knock on him at this point is that he doesn’t always attend music events, which has led to some animosity towards him and those students. The real key is to be active and engaging with the students, which in turn will help model any vision that the principal wants to put into effect.

For some the vision is an agent of change, for others it is a source of confusion.
