Hospitality industry is one of the several industries, which has gradually gained prominence in the modern business world. In order to fully explain the role of hospitality industry within the travel and tourism sector and the interrelationship between the two, it is imperative to discuss what the hospitality sector actually entails.
Hospitality sector comprises of various smaller sectors, for instance restaurants, hotels, accommodation, holiday and theme parks, transportation, event management and most importantly, travel and tourism services. In very simplistic terms, Tourism may be defined as the activity of travelling for the purposes of business or pleasure for a specific period of time. One of the major reasons behind the importance given to Travel and tourism services in the contemporary world is technology since it has raised the level of awareness amongst people and thus the tourism industry has now become not only one of the main sources of revenue for several countries but also provides employment opportunities for their people.
Although hospitality sector is made up of many smaller industries, the fundamental areas of work and the integral occupations within most of these industries are not distinct but overlap with each other. An example of this can be seen in the event management industry overlapping with the hotel industry where a wedding planner may be employed by a hotel and holiday parks which usually provide some kind of entertainment. For instance, Alton Towers is a theme park in England, however besides providing theme park attractions to the people, it also has different restaurants where people can eat and drink. In addition to that, the company not only caters to people visiting for business purposes by making arrangements for business meetings and conferences but provides excellent locations for destination weddings. Moreover, they have various other facilities such as spas, maid services, gift shops, laundry and child care to make they stay more enjoyable and comfortable.
All the examples, which have been quoted above, clearly show that hospitality plays an integral role when it comes to travel and tourism sector and most of the core features of the two areas are common to both of them. Taking all the arguments made above in to account, it can be easily said that the two industries have a deep-rooted connection and one cannot function effectively without the other supporting it.
