Your staring down the eyes of a dog twice your size, and much stronger than you. Your starving and the gashes on your face have barely healed from last night`s fight, but you`ve got to keep going. You’re fighting for your life in a ten by ten homemade ring. All bets are against you and if you loose one more fight, that man will take you where no dog has returned. Every day, thousands of animals silently suffer from animal abuse. I`m here to be the voice of those animals and inform you of this serious problem.
Animal fighting is a very common form of animal abuse. There are many different types but here are the most common. There is bullfighting, dogfighting, hog dog rodeo and cockfighting. In a bull fight, are weaken before every fight by having their horns shaved down and having petroleum jelly rubbed into their eyes. They are poked and prodded to make them angry and then turned loose in a ring where a matador stabs them repeatedly to death. In hog dog rodeos, one or two dogs attack hogs that had their tusks broken off. In cockfighting, roosters and hens are kept chained outside in bad conditions with little to no shelter or food. If they lose, the roosters and hens are killed by their trainers by being electrocuted, drowned, hung, burned, or shot. Others may be abandoned to die from their injuries from the fight they lost. One of the most well-known animal fighting sports is dog fighting. Dog fighting started in the 1860`s when men were looking for a cheap sport to watch. They started fighting bull dogs that were used as hunting dogs. These dogs were strong but were not athletic enough. That`s when they started fighting pit bulls because they were light and much more athletic than bull dogs. Breeders started breeding pit bul...

...Brothers were charged with failure to provide a dying baby elephant with veterinary care and were fined $20,000. In late 2011, they were charged with improper handling of dangerous animals, Failure to provide adequate veterinary care, causing trauma and stress to two injured elephants, failure to test elephants for tuberculosis; a common disease for elephants, and having unsanitary feeding practices. The circus was charged with the largest law suit in circus history for $270,000.
Animal abuse is a serious crime and shouldn`t be taken lightly. Animals throughout the world are exploited for entertainment and worked to death for the pleasures of others. Thousands of animals have become victims of animal abuse and if we do not put a stop to it, thousands more will suffer as well. They always say, Dogs are man`s best friend and I think it`s time for us to repay the favor.
Therefore, animal abuse is a growing trend in today’s society. This trend is bad for today’s society for reasons including death row for the animals, an increase in cost for animal shelters, and a decrease in space for the animals to be safe. Society can stop animal abuse by reporting anything they might see. Together, our society can put a stop to animal abuse, and protect our domesticated pets.
Robert Gonzales is only one of many people to commit animal cruelty. Kevin Brunson was also accused of harming an animal. He starved his dog, Rambo, until he weighed only fifty-one pounds. A normal dog his size would weigh around one hundred and twenty-five pounds. Rambo was seventy-four pounds underweight. A dog named, Lacey had scabbing around the eyes and other injuries from being abused. “Lashawn Whitehead of Greensboro, admitted to police that she beat her dog for fifteen minutes, then set it on fire. The dog ran away, and she was found. Her injuries were burned ears, a broken jaw, and teeth. She was adopted into a new loving family.” (Cawthon 2) All animals are affected when it comes to animal abuse. Horses have been reported to be starved and in very poor living conditions. Owners don’t clean stalls, feed the animals, or take care of the horses grooming needs. The horses become depressed to due to the lack of care they receive. Sixteen horses were found at Gina Rapuano’s Farm, Apache, Willy, and Destiny are merely three of the horses greatly in need of care. Apache was starved so much you could see his ribs; he was infested with worms, and needed hoof and dental care. Willy had trouble walking, and horrible eye infections. Destiny had such bad dental care that he could not eat properly, and was starving. “The horses eyes were dull; they were not alert. They t...
Animal abuse is described generally as any act or omission that causes unnecessary or unreasonable harm to an animal. Animal abuse are vary and can lead to different forms. These may include, tormenting or beating an animal, executing an animal in a harsh way, binding or transporting an animal in a way that is improper for its welfare, neglecting to give fitting living conditions, neglecting to give proper or satisfactory sustenance or water for an animal and neglecting to give suitable treatment to infection or injury (Animal Cruelty, n.d.). In general, for an act to be considered as animal cruelty, it must be a non-accidental, socially unacceptable, enacted on a vertebrate animal, causing pain, suffering and distress or death. (Battle, 2013).
What exactly is dogfighting? Well to quote Humane Society is a “Dogfighting is a sadistic "contest" in which two dogs—specifically bred, conditioned, and trained to fight—are placed in a pit (generally a small arena enclosed by plywood walls) to fight each other for the spectators' entertainment and gambling (humanesociety.org). Fights average one to two hours, ending when one of the dogs will not or cannot continue. In addition to these organized dogfights, street dogfights are a problem in many urban areas.” Aside from the legal problems, the mental and physical effects that dogfighting can have on these animals are severe and often fatal (humanesociety.org). they normally die of blood loss, exhaustion, shock, dehydration or any of the possible injuries it is inflicted with during the fight (humanesociety.org). Those that are rescued usually suffer a lot of mental scarring and develop aggressive behavior, that is if they aren't put down. Once they are rescued there is a lot of work that goes into deprogramming the aggressive behavior that they were taught from their old owners
Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
Should animals have to go through pain and suffering? Should they have to go without food and/or water? The answer is no. Animal abuse happens everyday and it happens because people are barbarous or because they don’t know how to take the best care of an animal that they have. Whatever the reason it’s still not right and will never be okay. This paper will cover a brief history of animal abuse, the statistics, the signs of animal abuse, and what can be done to stop animal abuse. Animal abuse needs to end for the animals that can’t speak for themselves.
Animal-rights advocates say the rule would make it easier to shut down unscrupulous commercial operations that confine breeding females at length, depriving them of food, water and veterinary care and leaving them outdoors to freeze in the winter and roast in the summer as they give birth to litter after litter of profitable pups- (Chebium). Animals don’t have a voice; people have to be the voice for them. Animals have no way to help themselves because people make them do what people want them to. They cannot talk back to say that they do not like or want to do what people make them do, people have to go off on what is right. Animals are living creatures they need food, water, and to be taken care of or they could die. People take advantage of animals because people look at them and think since they are not human their lives are not important. When we think they are not worth anything people start neglecting animals.
Although not all humans treat animals badly, we should still attempt to educate as many people as we could about animal cruelty. Animal cruelty does not only affect animals, it affects humans as well. Animals that are abused tend to be aggressive or traumatized and these animals can lash out at any human at any given time. This is a danger towards people, especially little children. Children should be educated from their early ages so that our next generation will treat animals kindly and stop animal cruelty. There are some people who care deeply about animals, and we all should aim to be like those people. These people set up animal shelter and rescue centers to give abandoned animals a home. I believe this is a fantastic thing to do because research shows that animals are much more happy and healthy when they have a proper home rather than being surrounded by so many other animals in the shelter. Animals should not be caged up because they need to be free. There is a viral video on the internet that shows an angora bunny being tortured by having its feathers plucked out one by one. This is one of the worst forms of animal cruelty. Have you ever heard of the dog ass Man’s Best
There are many animal owners that believe abusing it is the only way to control and train it (Nine Reasons for Animal Abuse). This not only includes animals that are pets, it includes the ones that are in the performing business (Nine Reasons for Animal Abuse). Trainers that do not properly know how to get the animal to act as they want may result in using physical harm to initiate fear, and this will “teach” the animal to do as it is told, so it does not have to risk being abused all over again. As another reason as to why a person may not think of animal cruelty as something serious is due to what the philosopher Raymond G. Frey of Bowling Green State University had to say on the issue. His argument is based around his belief that because animals are not human, they do not have moral rights (The Animal Rights Debate). He also goes on to say that their lives do not have the same moral values as the lives of humans due to another belief that he possesses, which is thinking an animal does not undergo the same emotional and intellectual experiences as a human would (The Animal Rights Debate). While there are some that do not believe that animal cruelty is a serious issue because they have placed their trust in what Raymond G. Fray has said, there are others that simply think animals are a lower form of life (Missimer). These people conclude that
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Animal abuse is a travesty in our world that must be stopped. Every year, millions of animals suffer because of human actions, directly or indirectly. Whether it’s abused dogs and cats or even mistreated circus animals, their suffering is as real as it would be if it happened to us. Even animals who are raised on farms simply for human consumption should not have to suffer. One of the worst parts of humanity’s role in animal abuse is that there are easy ways for people to help that they are either ignorant of or simply refuse to do. There are many examples of animals who are abused by humans, but there are also ways for people to help prevent and put an end to animal abuse.
“Man is the highest rated animal, at least among all the animals who returned the questionnaire (Brault, 2009).” For years humans have been using animals for experimentation, food, clothing, sport and entertainment, manual labor, and let us not forget man’s best friend. The unethical treatment of animals can best be resolved by deontology contrasted with ethical egoism.
Some aspects of Animal abuse are completely avoidable, the cruelty brings no scientific knowledge, food, or testing. In the entertainment industry “wild and exotic animals are trained through the use of intimidation and physical abuse. Former circus employees have reported seeing animals beaten, whipped, poked with sharp objects and even burned to force them to learn their routines!”(dosomething) Cruelty for entertainment is not a fair trade by any means.
