In most countries, horror movies are beloved and popular genre for certain group of people who are eager to have different types of feeling and emotion. It usually delivers wired, freaky, uncanny, fearful and uncomfortable feeling to its audiences. There have been thousands ways of expressing fearful emotion to the horror film lovers, however, most horror film have something in common that provokes fearful emotion by using particular context, such as gender discrimination and trauma of wars. Without understanding such a context, foreign horror films are understandable to other nations audiences, which means that the process of feeling threatened and fearful does not need to rely heavily on certain cultural or historical information. In this essay, I will examine two main questions. First one is why people steadily enjoy horror movies in such an urbanized and modernized society, and second one is how making and consuming horror film are relevant to our every day lives.

It is an undeniable fact that German expressionism led immensely to the development of horror film. After The cabinet of Dr. Cagliari was made, many contemporary horror movie makes repeatedly use the lighting techniques and its mise-en-scene to maximize their expression of terror. Due to the goal that movie had to create illusion and grotesque mood, which did not exist in real world, directors Robert Wiene strived to use artificial lighting and stage designs. It has been so influential not only to horror movies but also to other genres, since the lighting techniques used in the movie are created to contrast main character with environments and also emphasis on evil or protagonists. Mentioned monsters do not have clear distinction of life and death, soul and soulless, which is immortal ability like Frankenstein and Vampyrs.

This idea of uncanny was reformulated in terms of limits of representation by Immanuel Kant.
