Have you ever known someone with an ulterior motive? Or maybe had someone that fooled you so that you could do their dirty work? What if that person used your loyalty to them to make you their slave? In Animal Farm, an allegorical book by George Orwell, many animals are tricked into being loyal slaves of an all-powerful pig named Napoleon. Every animal on the farm, except a select few, was bamboozled into Napoleon’s cruel hooves without even realizing it, and therefore should’ve learned to double- check before becoming loyal. Early on in the story, Napoleon starts to show his motives to readers, but the animals are still under the impression that Animalism is continuing to thrive. When the animals realized that rations were decreasing, Squealer lied and said it only seemed that way, and that times were still better than they had been with Mr. Jones. In order to secure a life of luxury for he and his fellow pigs, Napoleon, along with Squealer as his spokesman, uses language that intimidates, language that distorts the truth, and language that appeals to the emotions of the others to manipulate the gullible animals of Animal Farm. Napoleon's life of luxury included the milk, human beds, alcohol, money, a par education, and the surrounding of his fellow pigs to emotionally and physically stabilize him. However it tampered with a more crucial goal, which was the goal for the equivalent animals lesser than him to prosper equally with him as well. His abuse of his absolute power by ordering his guard dogs to drive his adversary out of competition, and his tactics to silence the animals from rebelling again made his leadership corrupt, and the entire existence of the post-rebellion corrupt as well.

In George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, these elaborate concepts are further explored through various characters such as the shire boar, Napoleon. Napoleon’s ability to exercise control over the animals derives from his capability to indoctrinate them with his partial ideologies. Napoleon then further clasps his power by his avail of expert power throughout the novel. Finally, the excessive and abusive use of coercive power, secures Napoleon’s control over the animals. We often struggle to find the reasoning in what triggers one’s mind to become a dedicated and obsessed follower of a specific person. Every day, we are in danger of being absorbed and sinking further into the ideology and plastic image that is set before our eyes. The subject of committing one’s self to a person with hidden intentions, is heavily touched on in George Orwell’s well known allegorical novel, Animal Farm. We are presented with animals that stand upon one common goal, that is to rise against human oppressors and establish a farm solely based upon equality. Challenges begin to face this goal, when one pig named Napoleon, gains leadership and stirs absolute fear and respect in the animals.
Throughout the story, the first signal that illustrates the corruption in pigs started right after the animals chased away Mr. Jones. When the animals milked the cows and discussed about what to do with all the milk, Napoleon cried “Never mind the milk, comrades…placing himself in front of the buckets” (p18) and then all buckets of milk disappeared. This is foreshadowing that later Napoleon may become the kind of leader who keeps everything good for himself and does not care about others, and this actually happened later. Several days later, someone found out that all the milk was mixed in pigs’ mash everyday as well as the apples and pointed that pigs broke the rule of “All animals are equal” (p17). This time the pigs cannot stay calm anymore. Squealer firstly said that they pigs actually do not like milk and apples and the reason why they added those into their mash was because they were ‘brainworkers’ and those were good for their brain and only when they were healthy enough the other’s safety can be guaranteed. Napoleon had strong support system that consisted of most of the animals on the farm and everyone looked up to him. His strongest supporters were Squealer, the dogs, Boxer, and the sheep. Squealer did many things throughout the book that show his loyalty to Napoleon. Changing the commandments and being Napoleon’s voice were the main ways Squealer supported Napoleon ( ). The dogs were Napoleon’s way of using scare tactics and intimidation. They did anything that Napoleon commanded them to do. The dogs main impact on the story was when they chased Snowball off the farm and when they oversaw the slaughtering of all the animals ( ). “Napoleon is always right,” was Boxer’s motto and he always blindly supported Napoleon ( ). Judging from the movie and book, we can also infer that the animals had a miserable life and were tricked out of their freedom. Even though they were free from Jones, they still had to deal with Napoleon . Both the movie and book prove that the animals were not better off with Napoleon than they were with Jones. The animals were still hungry, tired, and miserable, in reality, the only animal who benefited from Rebellion was Napoleon himself.
So it would be reasonable for the animals not to stand up and say something to their “great” leader. An example of how Napoleon scares the animals into doing what he wants is by having the big dogs around him all the time. Those dogs were trained by Napoleon to be his guard dogs and whenever any animals did something wrong, the dogs would kill them alive in front of everyone. There was one occasion where some animals confessed to doing wrong and got their heads ripped off in front of everyone. Instead of the animals telling Napoleon that his behavior is wrong, the animals blame themselves for not working hard enough and due to this, their comrades have been killed. They blame themselves because they are afraid that if they blame Napoleon, then the same thing will happen to them as their past friends. Also once the pigs assume leadership, Fear is then used by the propaganda master Squealer when he stresses to the animals that they have to struggle in order to avoid Jones' return. Squealer uses the fear of Jones as sort of the ending to all arguments if any animal voices their discontent about life under the pigs. Orwell demonstrates that political regimes often use tools such as playing on fear as a way to consolidate their own power and ensure that there will not be any questioning of their ways. He exhibited greediness when he sold the dying horse, Boxer to a slaughterhouse for money so that he and the other pigs could purchase whiskey. Orwell ridicules human nature through Napoleon in the sense that he is trying to show how the greedy and power hungry eventually end in corruption.
The disappearance of the milk grew questioning in the animals on the farm, but Napoleon sent Squealer to explain, “Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of the pig (Orwell 36).” They took advantage of the animal’s knowledge by saying it was for the animals sake that they consume the apples and milk to keep the farm running, and threatens the return of Mr. Jones. Napoleon often uses the image of Jones as a scare tactic in order to get the other animals to agree with him.
