In the United States homicide is a very important and touchy subject. What is homicide? Homicide is when someone decides to take the life of another, regardless of their intentions or other details surrounding the incident (Reuters, 2017). Surprisingly, poverty often links itself with homicide, giving it a positive correlation (Bailey, 1984). It is very apparent to know that not all homicides are crimes; however, they all involve the killing of a human being. The main three types of homicides are murder, manslaughter, and legal homicides.

The person who initially pronounced the individual dead should tell the detective the time, date, and location of the body at the time of determination (National Justice of Institute, 2011). Once the detective has officially confirmed the death, the medicolegal jurisdiction needs to be established (Kirwan, 1952). After determining all of that, the investigator would need to conduct a scene walk-through to prevent contamination of any evidence. While communicating with other detectives, an entry and exit point should be talked about to help with contamination. Conducting a walk-through would give the investigator an overview of the entire scene. It is very important that everything is documented for all persons that have had any contact with the scene. By having everything documented, it helps prove that there was no planting and contamination, theft, and tampering with the evidence (National Institute of Justice, 2011). After doing an initial walk-through and establishing a chain of custody, it is very important for the detective to take photos of the entire scene (Centrex, 2006). The importance of taking a photograph is to have a visual form of documentation of what happened. The photo needs to be taken from various angles to give different perspectives and to help with additional evidence. Some of the photos would need to include scales so that it can be as specific as possible. If evidence has been moved prior to taking any photographs, it is essential that it is documented. According to the National Institute of Justice (2011), “The body of other evidence should not be reintroduced into the scene in order to take photographs.” Not only should there be photographs of the scene, but a written documentation is important as well. Especially with each photograph taken, there would need to be an adequate description of each picture (Lothridge, 2013). Although mass murderers and serial killers are both dangerous and somewhat sick people, there are several distinct characteristics of each that put them in different categories. The most distinct differences between the two are; Most mass killers kill several victims over a relatively short period of time, usually hours, but sometimes days (Murder 1). Many states today categorize murder into two degrees: first and second, but others have even more degrees based upon motive, intent, or time. Although England had established a set of criteria for the definition of degrees of murder, the Pennsylvania Court in the Act of Assembly of 1794 stated, “All murder which shall be perpetrated by means of poison, or by lying in wait, or by any other kind of wilful, deliberate or premeditated killing or which shall be committed in the perpetration or attempt to perpetrate any arson, rape, robbery or burglary, shall be deemed murder in the first degree; and all other kinds of murder, shall be murder in the second degree.” (Loewy, 2009, p. 20). Collecting evidence from a crime scene is a crucial aspect of solving crimes. Before evidence can be seized, there must first be a court order approving the search of the crime scene and the seizure of the evidence found at the scene. Standard protocol for officers is for them to always use latex gloves, avoid plastic bags, double wrap small objects, package each object separately, and to collect as much evidence as possible. It would be comforting if real-life serial killers were like those in the movies. If they were obviously masked like Jason on Friday the 13th, we would be aware whenever they approached. If they were introverted loners like Psycho's Norman Bates, they could not trick us so easily into their deviant plan.
