Homelessness is a major public health problem throughout the United States due to increasing income disparities.1 About 650,000 people are homeless on any given day.2 Homelessness not only affects individuals, but families which include adults, children who may also experience mental illness, disabilities, or substance abuse.3 Homelessness is correlated with mental illness, substance abuse as well as loss of employment, poor health and, limited access to resources. While the state budget immediately considers fund housing initiatives to solve chronic homelessness it may not be the most efficient policy that this population needs. Housing does not provide necessary health services, may offer unequal aid to individuals and families, and may not be a priority for those individuals who are homeless. The state government should not fund housing policies for the homeless.
Having housing does not always mean that homeless individuals will have immediate stability. A housing first type of model will not take away a person 's risk of becoming homeless again. Many homeless individuals suffer with complicated health and behavioral health needs.4 In a cross sectional, longitudinal study of homeless families in 1998 found that even though families had access to housing; their mental health problems still recurred over a 12 month period, especially in children.5 State government funds for housing for the homeless should be used to support this population to be self sufficient. Intervention efforts should be concentrated on preventing the loss of homes, and safety that can ultimately influence a person 's health negatively.
Housing support for the homeless should not be funded by the state government until they review other services needed to make housing a supportive program. Research shows that supportive assistance can help homeless individuals cope with health and mental illness problems, get equal access to housing resources, and have their individual needs met. The state government needs to make changes to fund prevention homelessness. If the state government can prevent these housing losses individual will be able to live as a part of society and support themselves.
