The Holocaust in Denmark: A review of the BBC Documentary: “Auschwitz: The Nazis and the’ Final Solution’ On the background of the Second World War, the Holocaust or the ethnic cleansing of the Jews happened, as a result of the Nazi policies of repression. The Holocaust is one the most traumatic historical events for humanity, and it shows us what humankind is possible of doing regarding the other people of a certain ethnicity. The historical documentary realized by BBC-“Auschwitz: The Nazis and the ‘Final Solution’’’ provides us with a remarkable source of information regarding the outcomes of the Nazi regime, focusing on the policies of repression held on the Jews, Soviets, Polish and Gypsies. This documentary is a historical lesson which illustrates how the decisions on the Jews’ faith were taken by the Nazis leaders and the manners in which they were applied. The concentration camps such as Auschwitz 1,2,3, Treblinka, the ghettos and other concentration camps whose existence was covered up by the Nazis without success; are presented within this documentary, along with the atrocities endured by the Jews. In this manner, this documentary, illustrates not only the perspective inside the Nazi state, their desire to “purify the world” by exterminating all the Jews, but also it reveals us how the Jews managed to accept or not their faith decided by the Nazis forces. It is a documentary which covers all the perspectives of the parts involved in the Holocaust, allowing us to analyze how this terrible event had taken place; by presenting the situation from its very roots. This episode in the history of the Holocaust should make us reflect whether the outcomes of the Nazi regime towards the Jewish population would have been different, if all the occupied countries from Europe, and even the other states have had the attitude and the resistance shown by the Danes.     Following the beginning of the Second World War, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany and Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union would start what would become two of the worst genocides in world history. These totalitarian governments would “welcome” people all across Europe into a new domain. A domain in which they would learn, in the utmost tragic manner, the astonishing capabilities that mankind possesses. Nazis and Soviets gradually acquired the ability to wipe millions of people from the face of the Earth. Throughout the war they would continue to kill millions of people, from both their home country and Europe. This was an effort to rid the Earth of people seen as unfit to live in their ideal society. These atrocities often went unacknowledged and forgotten by the rest of the world, leaving little hope for those who suffered. Yet optimism was not completely dead in the hearts of the few and the strong. Reading Man is Wolf to Man: Surviving the Gulag by Janusz Bardach and Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi help one capture this vivid sense of resistance toward the brutality of the German concentration and Soviet work camps. Both Bardach and Levi provide a commendable account of their long nightmarish experience including the impact it had on their lives and the lives of others. The willingness to survive was what drove these two men to achieve their goals and prevent their oppressors from achieving theirs. In David Engel’s The Holocaust: The Third Reich and the Jews, he rationalizes that the annihilation of the Jews by the Germans was a result of how Jews were viewed by the leaders of the Third Reich-- as pathogens that threatened to destroy all humanity. By eliminating the existence of the Jews, the Third Reich believed that it would save the entire world from mortal danger. Through documents such as Franzi Epsteins’s, “Inside Auschwitz-A Memoir,” in The Jew in the Modern World: A Documentary History by Paul Mendes-Flohr and Jehuda Reinharz, one is able to see the struggle of the Jews from a first-hand account. Also, through Rudolf Hoess’s “Commandant of Auschwitz,” one is able to see the perspective of a commandant in Auschwitz. In Auschwitz: A History, Sybille Steinbacher effectively describes the concentration camp of Auschwitz, while Hermann Langbein’s People in Auschwitz reflects on Rudolf Hoess’s power and control in Auschwitz as commandant. Through these four texts, one is able to see the effects that the Third Reich’s Final Solution had on the Jews and the commandants.

    The events which have become to be known as The Holocaust have caused much debate and dispute among historians. Central to this varied dispute is the intentions and motives of the perpetrators, with a wide range of theories as to why such horrific events took place. The publication of Jonah Goldhagen’s controversial but bestselling book “Hitler’s Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust” in many ways saw the reigniting of the debate and a flurry of scholarly and public interest. Central to Goldhagen’s disputed argument is the presentation of the perpetrators of the Holocaust as ordinary Germans who largely, willingly took part in the atrocities because of deeply held and violently strong anti-Semitic beliefs. This in many ways challenged earlier works like Christopher Browning’s “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland” which arguably gives a more complex explanation for the motives of the perpetrators placing the emphasis on circumstance and pressure to conform. These differing opinions on why the perpetrators did what they did during the Holocaust have led to them being presented in very different ways by each historian. To contrast this I have chosen to focus on the portrayal of one event both books focus on in detail; the mass shooting of around 1,500 Jews that took place in Jozefow, Poland on July 13th 1942 (Browning:2001:225). This example clearly highlights the way each historian presents the perpetrators in different ways through; the use of language, imagery, stylistic devices and quotations, as a way of backing up their own argument.
