Dimension of Culture Scores
Culture is “the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one group or category of people from another” (Rodriguez, R. P. & Hechanova, R. M., 2014, as cited in Hofstede, 2001). Business is worldwide and each organization is shaped by culture and the people running the organization (Wharton, 1999). It’s very interesting to see the differences of cultural concepts of leadership skills in various countries, and how the six dimensions are perceived by each culture. I compared several countries side-by-side and found that each country was moderately similar in several categories except for the “Indulgence” category. According to Hofstede’s definition of Indulgence versus restraint, he narrows it down to a society that will allow relatively natural enjoyment of basic life. Indulgence. Hofstede defines this dimension as “the extent to which people try to control their desires and impulses” (Hofstede, G. 2001). Weak control over impulses is characterized as indulgence, while strong control shows restraint. The United States scored a high 68. Italy scored a low 30 which indicates this society exercises restraint. Hofstede suggests this society does not put leisure’s high on a list of importance. They feel it may be wrong by social norms to indulge (Hofstede, G. 2001).
Cultural differences is a very important element to consider while achieving to be an effective leader. Hofstede’s Six Dimensions of Culture outlines the important factors for working within different cultures and how a leader can identify and change their leadership style to be perceived correctly within that culture.
