The difference between HIV and AIDS is that HIV is the actual virus that invades the body, while AIDS is considered the final stage of an HIV infection. An individual is considered to have AIDS when they have contracted one or more Opportunistic Infections (OIs) (Fan, p. 205). Opportunistic Infections are bacterium, parasites, or viruses that take advantage of a weak immune system. They are usually signs of a rapidly declining immune system. A few examples of OIs are Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, and Toxoplasma.
While there is no scientifically proven origin of HIV/AIDS, many scientists believe that it originated in Africa from the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV). The first reported case of HIV was in 1959 in the Republic of Congo. Scientists believe that HIV originated from SIV because of the many similarities between SIV and HIV. Both SIV and HIV are considered retroviruses, meaning they are viruses that carry their genetic information in RNA rather than DNA (Crandall, p. 15).

The people that follow this antiretroviral therapy will most likely have a higher CD4/T Cell count because of the drugs that help block the HIV replication cycle.
