In the early years of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates, created this popular exercise derived from his last name. During this time, Joseph Pilates was a German boxer and performed in a circus.
The idea for Pilates came while he was forced live in an internment camp during World War I. To keep healthy, he created floor exercises for himself and the people that were living in the camp with him.
After World War I was over, Joseph Pilates returned to Germany and worked with the Hamburg Military Police. He ended up moving again to the United States. Upon his return he fell in love and got married. He still had the exercise plan on the back burner. After he got married, he and his wife made some enhancements and improvements to the exercise

Pilates stands on a foundation that is guided by six principles. These principles help to maintain movement of your body and control of your mind. Let’s take a look at them:
Breathing – One important factor of Pilates is breathing. Joseph Pilates showed his students how to utilize deep breathing while exercising to help the lungs and chest muscles get stronger. Control – For this purpose, in Pilates, this is referring to control of your muscles. With Pilates, it is important to control the muscles, even if it’s a slight movement. When the muscles are controlled, they get strengthened and endure resistance as you continue exercising.
Flow – When flow is involved, this is how the exercises are executed. Joseph Pilates was interested in using less movement. In addition to that, he wanted to create more efficiency and body effects. So, he decided more flowing movements and shunned the exercises that took most if not all of your strength.
Precision – When you’re doing Pilates, you have to pay attention to what you’re doing. With this, it’s important to have correct placement and alignment of one part of your body to another as you go through each movement.

In the frontal plane, the movement shows the depression of scapula. The joint involved in this part of the pirouette is the scapulothoracic joint. This motion can be analyzed in the frontal plane or the sagittal due to the movements of the shoulders with the trunk (Hall, 2011). In the transverse plane it is the external rotation of the hip that helps form a pirouette. The muscles used to perform the rotation are the gluteus minimus, piriformis, superior gemellus, inferior gemellus, obturator internus, obturator externus, and quadratus femoris (Hall, 2011). These muscles are used to help the leg move to the correct position for a pirouette.
