The first ever computer was invented in the 1820s by Charlse Babbage. However the first electronic digital computer were developed between 1940 and 1945 in the United States and in the United Kingdom. They were gigantic, originally the size of a large room, and also need to be supply a large amount of power source which is equivalent as several hundred modern personal computers. The history of computer hardware covers the developments from simple devices to aid calculation, to mechanical calculators, punched card data processing and on to modern stored program computers. The tools or mechanical tool used to help in calculation are called calculators while the machine operator that help in calculations is called computer. At first the aids of computation were purely mechanical devices which required the person to set up initial values of an elementary arithmetic operation, then he will have to manipulate the device to obtain the result. Analog computers, which could represented the number in the form of digits, automatically manipulated by mechanical mechanism.

In 1946 the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC) was pioneered by two scientist from University of Pennsylvania, John Mauchly and J.Presper Eckert. Which used a vacuum tubes. They were inspired by the idea of bush differential analyzer that is why the ENIAC was called the descendant of Dr Bush’s machine. However their inventions are far more ambitious, it contained nearly 18000 vacuum tubes and was24m long and weighed almost 30 tons. It is generally recognized as the world’s first fully electronic general-purpose, digital computer.

In the late 1940s the two inventors of ENIAC formed the Eckert Mauchly Computer Corporation and while working with b...

...3, Xerox PARC, electrical engineer Bob Metcalfe developed a new and effective way of linking computers “through the ether” (empty space) that he called Ethernet.as the 1980s progressed, and as more and more companies explored the power of local area networks (LAN), it arise the need and the questions, wouldn't it be great benefits gained by connecting computers over even greater distances. That’s what founded the so called wide area networks (WAN). Today the best known WAN is the internet, a global network of individual computes and LAN that links up hundreds of millions of people. It all began in the 1960s when the history of internet is created, where four American universities launched a project to connect their computer system together to make the first WAN. However it was Tim Berbers-Lee’s invention that brings you this potted history of computing today.

The History of Computers in Education Essay examples

- The history of computers in education starts with the MARK1 and ENIAC computers being used in 1944 and 1946 in Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania respectively. The first use of computers then in education was to compute problems in the mathematical, scientific, and engineering fields to allow students to deal with big problems they would more than likely encounter one day in a real world situation. In 1959, Donald Bitier began the “large-scale” PLATO project, which was a “several thousand-terminal system [that] served undergraduate education, as well as elementary school reading, a community college in Urbana, and several campuses in Chicago.” (Molnar) In 1963 at Dartmouth, John Kem...   [tags: HIstory of Computers, Education, Advancements]

Essay on History of Modern Computers

- 1945-Present The evolution of modern computers is divided into a few "distinct" generations. Each generation is characterized by extreme improvements over the prior era in the technology used in the manufacturing process, the internal layout of computer systems, and programming languages. There has also been a steady improvement in algorithms, including algorithms used in computational science, though not usually associated with computer generations. The following timeline has been organized using a logical breakdown of events and discoveries....   [tags: PC computers Technology History Essays]

The History of Computers Essay

- The History of Computers The idea of a machine that would make man’s calculations easier, faster, and more accurate is no new notion. The Abacus, “Napier’s rods”, the “Calculating Clock”, and the “Stepped Reckoner” are a few examples of early computer ideas In the more recent history of the computer, we can see how computers have morphed (or dwarfed) from clunky, million-dollar machines into the compact and convenient parts of our everyday lives (Computer Science Student Resource Website, 2003, “Evolution of Computers: From Stone to Silicon”, Section 1)....   [tags: Technology Technological Computers Essays]

The History of Computers Essay

- The History of Computers In order to fully understand the history of computers and computers in general, it is important to understand what it is exactly that lead up to the invention of the computer. After all, there was a time when the use of laptops, P.C.s, and other machines was unthinkable. Way back in the fourth century B.C., the abucus was an instrument used for counting in Babylonia. Many scholars believe that it likely started out as pebbles being moved over lines drawn in the dirt and then evolved into a more complex counting tool (Aspray 7)....   [tags: Technology Computers Essays]

History of Computers Essay

- History of Computers It all began on a brisk, damp October evening in the year nineteen hundred and ninety-nine. All was silent in the household except for the incessant whistling of the tea kettle on the kitchen stove. Oh, and how can I forget the humming of the lawnmower in the backyard. I had just arrived home from band practice when the doorbell rang. Anxious to see if it was for me, I raced down the stairs in hopes that I had received a package, or perhaps flowers, from a boy....   [tags: Computers Technology Technological Essays]
