1. Summarize the historical background, demographics, and diversity within the Latino/Hispanic American community in the United States.
Under the Manifest Destiny announcement, which took place in the 1800s, “the United States began the expansionist policy of annexing vast territories to the south, north and west” (Ch. 7 Law Enforcement Contact with Latino/Hispanic Americans, n.d.). With the seizure or yet known as the “annexation of the Louisiana Territories in 1803”, Florida in 1819, Texas in 1845, and the Northwest Territories (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana) in 1846” (Ch. 7 Law Enforcement Contact with Latino/Hispanic Americans, n.d.), it appeared to be about unavoidable that clash would happen with Mexico. However, in 1848 the Mexican-American War ended “with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in which Mexico received $15 million from the United States for the land that is now Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, with more than 100,000 Mexican people living in those areas” (Ch. 7 Law Enforcement Contact with Latino/Hispanic Americans, n.d.). Although “one-third of Mexican Americans can” delineate their antecedents to families which lived “in the United States in the mid-1800s” (Ch.7 Law Enforcement Contact with Latino/Hispanic Americans, n.d.), the dominant part of this gathering moved into the United States after 1910 due to the monetary and political changes that happened as the consequence of the Mexican Revolution. “These historical facts must be considered by anyone inclined to think of Mexican Americans as “aliens”(Module A Cultural diversity and racial sensitivity, n.d.).
