The Methodological Perspectives Of Jesus Of Nazareth

In this question I will discuss three insights I have acquired in this course.
1) Methodological: One methodological perspective that we discussed throughout the semester is the historical/critical perspective of thinking and reading about Jesus and the context in which he was living within. We discussed the political, economic and social contexts in which Jesus was going around and spreading the word about the coming of the Kingdom of God. This approach to studying whom Jesus of Nazareth was aiming to shine light on the “depoliticized Jesus” (Horsley). Because so much focus is placed on the religious figure of Jesus, society tends to ignore the political, economic and social aspects of Jesus’ practices. I was told that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that he was placed here on earth specifically to spread the word about God’s plans for a more restored world. But, I never questioned these answers and truly thought to dive deeper into why Jesus died for our sins or what was happening during the time period that Jesus was carrying out his mission. After finishing this course, I feel like I learned countless details about Jesus’ life and death that I never would have had the opportunity of learning without taking this course. As stated before, I learned that in addition to Jesus’ life including religious features, it also included political, economic and social features that all existed in Rome during his lifetime. In addition, I learned why Jesus died for our sins and how he was crucified, and that crucifixion was seen as the harshest form of punishment in the Roman Empire, which signified that Jesus had done something severely threatening to the Empire. I never would have had the ability to learn half of the information discussed within this paper if it weren’t for taking this course. I was able to broaden my narrow Christian church perspective of who Jesus was, in order to be able to see who the real historical Jesus of Nazareth
