Hills like White Elephants Hemingway was known for writing very little with a lot of underlying meaning. Most of his work is based more or less on dialogue. In “Hills Like White Elephants” we have a brief introduction of the scenery and then dialogue between Jig and the American. This short story does not give you any hints as to what is really being said by the main characters but the tone, scenery, and symbolism do play a big part in explaining the situation at hand and what Hemingway was trying to convey in this short piece. The scene is set in Barcelona, Spain at a railroad station that overlooks hills across the valley. The main characters proceed to wait in a bar until their train arrives to take them to Madrid, Spain. Jig begins by asking if she can have a drink and the two start drinking and speaking of an operation Jig is supposed to be having. The conversation gets slightly intense which becomes apparent by the body language and tone that is given off. The American is trying to settle her nerves by telling her “It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig,’ the man said. ‘It’s not really an operation at all.”(Hemingway) Although it seems like the American is trying to be supportive it changes when Jig replies. After thoroughly reading the story you come to find out the operation is actually an abortion. At first read you think the American is being supportive and trying to calm Jigs nerves but that later changes when you read Jigs reactions to what is being said to her. An argument flourishes and causes Jig to walk away and look at the scenery and dwell in the beauty. This later transitions to the end of the piece where the American takes the baggage to the end of the tracks because their train would be arriving shor... ... middle of paper ... ...would have the baby and he’ll stick around for a while but I think him leaving is inevitable. The American already made it clear that his happiness would be best determined after the operation, so clearly he won’t really be happy if she does have the baby. In life we have to make compromises but that doesn’t mean that we have to compromise our thoughts, beliefs, or aspirations to please another. I think that’s what Hemingway was trying to get through. He wrote a piece that was very subtle but packed a lot of meaning and touches on what people really go through in life. When you sit here and dissect the story your imagination takes over and really makes you take your personal experiences and tie them into the story. Your personal experiences can ultimately leave you with a story you can understand thoroughly and understand the emotions coming off of the characters.
