High school is stressful, especially senior year, cramming for tests, late nights researching and writing papers, applying to colleges, and much more. Going from the stress of trying to pass high school to the stress of trying to adjust to college never gives anyone the time and ability to just relax and learn about themselves. Other countries encourage high school graduates to take a ‘gap-year’, which is a year off between high school and college. In a gap-year one could do several things, such as: travel to a different country, volunteer overseas to help a developing country, learn about a different culture, maybe take a few internships to gain insight on different careers. Before someone chooses a college major and pursues a career that they won’t really be satisfied with, they should take a year to find out what the world has to offer, the different careers that high school doesn’t mention. “But the true purpose of the break (…) is to allow high school graduates to learn more about what truly interests them and to discover themselves before they enter college, choose a major, and embark on a career path” (Burnsed, 2011). If someone goes from high school thinking they want to be a lawyer because it would pay well then they will eventually get tired of it if they are not just passionate about doing research and collecting data to prove a point and if someone does not enjoy what they are doing, then they are less likely to do a good job at it. A gap year would give them time to find something they enjoy and pursuing a career that involves their passion would result in them doing their job well. Moreover, if someone is shy then they should not go into a career that involves speaking in front of crowds but that is not always the case, sometimes they just need to face that fear but in a less intimidating environment. Although one may think they have to want and believe certain things but in a gap year they could find their own beliefs and wants and become their own person. A gap year gives someone time to discover what they’re really passionate about and hopefully find the career that best suits that passion because the more someone enjoys what they do, the better they do it. Also instead of just taking a year off to be lazy and useless one could travel to another country and experience a new culture and even have the chance to help that country as they are developing. A gap year is something that should be encouraged more often because it is so beneficial for pre-college
