In one way, shape, or form, astronomical symbols help us comprehend various things better; be it finding our way home, understanding a story’s plot or finally grasping how it relates to the story it was named after. The astronomical symbols that are the titles of each of the Twilight Saga books represent the stages of Bella’s life.
Twilight was the title of the opening book of the “Twilight Saga”. To recognize how it relates to the story, one must know what ‘twilight’ means. Twilight is the time between sunset and dusk; it is when ‘time stands still.’ Therefore, twilight is neither dark nor light; it is right in between. In Twilight, Bella is leaving her old life and beginning a new one. She moves away from her mother – the person that she has spent most of her life with – and goes to stay with her father, Charlie. Many things change for her: the climate, schools, friends, parents, homes, and more. She is moving from one stage of her life – the light, where she lived in a sunny place and was happy - to the darkness where danger, adventure and love await. Currently, she is in between the stages of light and dark, she is in twilight. Moving from hot, dry, and cloudless, Arizona to the cloudiest, coldest, rainiest place in the continental U.S. is also a big change for her; it turns out to be for the best, because without those clouds she would have never met her vampire sweetheart who reacts strangely to sunlight: Edward. The title – Twilight – connects to the story because it tells you that Bella’s previous way of life was over and her life was taking the turn at the fork road towards night and darkness, towards loving and spending her life with Edward. In bite me or don’t: twilight as abstinence porn, Christine Seifert from Westminster college in Utah, analyzes the twilight saga. Describing twilight saga as an abstinence porn saga. Christine agrees with twilight fans about the lost of abstinence and sexual tension in breaking dawn. Christine is a feminist writer from the Bitch magazine she emphasizes most of her critics towards Bella describing her as weak and with no control over her body (348). Seifert believes that Edward is in control of Bella’s protection, humanity and virginity.(348)Christine uses rhetorical strategies during her discussion, persuading the reader about the life of Bella as a teenage mom and how twilight transmits a message of abstinence.
Twilight is a book written by Stephanie Meyer, originally published in 2005 and later made in to a movie in November, 2008. The story of Adam and Eve is a story from the bible. Both stories have things on common. I will discuss how Bella and Edward which are the main characters from Twilight, demonstrate good and evil. Specifically, how their relationship compares to that of Adam and Eve. There are four themes / symbols that while researching and analyzing both stories I found that are very similar in meaning for both stories. Those themes/ symbols are: “The Apple,” “Good Vs. EVIL,” “Choices,” and “Mortality.”
Throughout the novel, the reader is presented with many different symbols. The symbols are clearly seen by Holden's constant repetition of their importance. The symbols are so important and their symbolism is directly related to the major themes of the novel.
The symbols that are used in literature can have a large impact on the story and what the reader pulls out from the story. If there was no symbol used in To Kill a Mockingbird, people would miss a lot of the story going on and they may not see the more innocent side of the story. Many stories people read are written for the express purpose of entertainment and sometimes even to persuade, but few are written to teach a moral. The story “A Fable with Slips of White Paper Spilling From The Pockets” written by Kevin Brockmeier does just that. Although relatively short, the story is filled with words of wisdom and life lessons that are meant to instill a sense of selflessness. The story is about a man who finds God’s overcoat from which he finds prayers from the people he encounters. Kevin Brockmeier makes exceptional use of magic realism and symbolism to teach a moral lesson.
“When i was a child i played with my cousin outside, where the lamplight fell upon the group and the singing of the old people rose around us and carries away into the darkness.” the idea of dark and light is a motif throughout this whole story not only showing good versus evil but also knowledge and the lack of knowledge. This also encompasses the traditions of singing and dancing. The elders and the singing bring knowledge which is represented through the lamplight which is singing on the children, who will soon gain the knowledge passed down. “Still, it was early in the morning, and the birds sang out of the shadows.” this is when he is older and the birds are the elders, still singing their traditional songs. This time we is in the light because his grandmother dies, and because he is older. In a way he is coming to realizations and the truth is seeping through. His personal experiences in rainy mountain helped his discover partes of himself, both the playful, happy child, and the mourning adult. The change in setting plays a large role in both aspects of his life, the darkness is bing naive and the sunlight is finally gaining knowledge. This is representative of everyone 's oneself. Each person 's experiences shape who they are. Not only the good but also the bad experiences cause you to learn about your innerself. This causes to you to grow as a person
In Night, Elie Weisel incorporates many different symbols. Symbolism works throughout a story to define the themes and major points in the story. The way the reader may interpret the symbols in are up to them, but either way, themes and symbolism work together for a better understanding of the story.
In the famous novel and movie series, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, an average teenage girl, Bella Swan, is forced to move from Arizona (where she lived with her mother) to Washington to start an almost new life with her father. She attends a small-town high school with mostly average people, besides one family, the Cullens. As Bella and Edward Cullen get closer, she uncovers a deep secret about him and his family. Their relationship faces many hard challenges and conflicts as the story develops. Both the novel and movie share very similar storylines, however, differ in many ways. From themes to author’s craft, or to relationships, these important parts of the story highlight the significant differences and similarities of Twilight.
Symbols provide more meaning and deeper representation of an object, or even a character. Through the usage of symbols, readers can connect and understand a character and their thoughts and actions. Janie Crawford connects with nature on a personal level, which provides readers insight. Nature, a predominant symbol in Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, directly parallels Janie’s desires and her sense of identity.
