Hidden Children When we talk about world war 2 the first thing that comes to mind is usually the Holocaust, and little attention is paid to the many children who survived the war by hiding. The children themselves wouldn’t talk about for years to come because they thought that since they weren’t actually in the war or in a camp, their story isn’t important.When you 're little you believe in the good in everyone. Though there are some kids that know early on how bad the world can be. Concentration camps were places where hundreds of thousands of jewish people were forced to labor under terrifying conditions, treated like dirt, then stuffed into gas chambers to die. Who could they ask without risking being betrayed? People were scared. Some wouldn’t dare hide a jewish child. If they were caught they would be punished. As hard as it was, jewish families found a way. Children were sent to live with people of different religions. They were forced to hide in cemeteries, in attics and basements. They disappeared completely, and some would never see the light of day for a long time. Felicia Graber wrote an article on hmlc.org about hidden children. She wrote that “The majority of child survivors were hidden children, children under the age of fourteen literally hiding in cemeteries, in holes dug under floor planks, in cellars, closets, haylofts, attics. ..Some of these were loved and accepted. Others were tolerated, exploited, or abused.” Being a hidden child didn’t guarantee life would be easy. People would take children in only to betray them later, and some blackmailed families with the knowledge of their children’s whereabouts. For the hidden child diaries are just one form in which they express themselves. Considering the life they had been forced into and the death and destruction just outside their door, children used artwork to open up and deal with the emotions they couldn’t show to anyone else. In a ushmm.org article say’s, “ Diaries, among the most intimate forms of writing, record innermost thoughts, hopes, fears, and aspirations. They generally are not meant for the public or prying eyes. For a hidden child, however, a diary 's personal nature presented a serious danger. A detail about one 's real family or identity could betray its author as well as his or her rescuer.” This show’s how diaries and other writing and work that might reveal their location was a huge risk. It also sheds light on how important diaries might have been to the kids who kept them. The life of a child in the 1930-1940 was not an easy life not if you were a Nazi, not if you were Jewish. These Children lost their childhood because of a war. Their shattered childhood creates stories that seem horrific to us today. Life as a child growing up in a Nazi family is probably easier than dealing with the problems that the Jewish children have. However, every Nazi child had to sign up for the Hitler Youth. The Hitler Youth was an organization to discipline young minds and preach to them about anti semitism. Hitler Youth was one of the largest youth groups in Europe at the time if parents did not have their children in it they would face fines or have charges of imprisonment. The Nazi regime brainwashed the kids, they made them aggressive and intolerable. In the group there was even a small ‘Gestapo’ that would make sure all the children were doing the correct task if not the ‘Gestapo’ would report this. This shows how much power the children were given. During the 1940s more boys were recruited to join the army or guard concentration camps and ghettos. Over one million Jewish children died during the Holocaust. They were ripped out of their homes and taken away from their families, and stripped of their childhoods. Innocent lives were caught in a war that they were not able to stop. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, he promised Germany that he would improve life their by getting rid of the one race that caused the problems, the Jews. Jews, including Jewish children, were sent to concentration camps, inspected, and if approved, were sent to work. All others would have been sent to be killed. Being sent to work did not ensure survival, children would be given very little food and water, and beaten severely, which caused their death. None of the children of the Holocaust will ever forget the experience they went through, they will always remember.

There were two types of hidden children: the children that didn’t look like the stereotypical Jew, and were hidden in plain sight, in an orphanage or maybe with a family who pretended the child was an orphaned family member. Then there were the ones that were truly hidden, such as in an abandoned building, a hidden room, or- as Lola was- in a hole dug beneath a cellar in a farmhouse on the edge of town. Either way, the children had to stay silent. While Lola Rein writes of her time in hiding she says, “But what kind of life is this? Children are supposed to be noisy, not silent…they are supposed to be part of the world, not live like they don’t exist” (Rein Kaufne). Lola also tells of how, during her year of hiding, she hardly spoke.
Regine Donner, a famous Holocaust survivor, once said, “I had to keep my Jewishness hidden, secret, and never to be revealed on the penalty of death. I missed out on my childhood and the best of my adolescent years. I was robbed of my name, my religion, and my Zionist idealism” (“Hidden Children”). This story is about the life of two boys who the author researched for a few years. The two boys were from Chicago, grew up in a poor family, surrounded by poverty, gangs, and violence as do many of us who come from low income, minority filled areas. The two boys unfortunately, sad to say end up in juvenile hall which clearly depicts the whole concept of crime and juvenile delinquency that arises from more issues than simply meets the eye . Issues relating to the social disorganization theory of poverty, disorganization, and low community control. Human trafficking is like modern day slavery; it is defined as the loss of freedom to another 's control by force, fraud or coercion.
