In recent years, our physical appearance has become extremely important to us, especially to women. We are concerned with how we look at every moment and will go to great lengths to achieve what we find to be “beauty.” We often become more concerned with our outward appearance than what is on the inside. No matter if it is the clothes we wear, the makeup all over our face, or the latest haircut we have; we spend so much time to look like what society perceives women to be. In doing this, we spend countless hours and dollars every year on the maintenance of our hair.
Thousands of women go to the salon everyday and spend unbelievable amounts of money on a hairdo that will only last a few shorts weeks. The time and money that women spend each day on cutting, dying, curling and brushing our hair is worth it when we receive complements throughout the day. In order to achieve picture perfect results, we test various products. Herbal Essences is one of the top hair care brands that women turn to for their needs and has been for many years.
Beauty will always be sought by women in any culture, so companies must change their approach to beauty as society evolves. Herbal Essences does just this through the years as beauty needs change and become more complex. Walker was America’s first African American female millionaire. She was born poor and orphaned, but later built her own business of manufacture hair products. A scalp infection lead her to the creation of her products. Like many women she struggled to find the solution to her problem, after she tried thousands of products, soon she started loosing her hair. While women have made significant strides in gaining more freedom and rights in the past decade, society and culture at large continue to place a great emphasis on how women look. Certain standards of feminine beauty are presented in many different forms of popular media, bombarding women with images that portray what is considered to be the "ideal body”. Consequently, the importance of physical appearance is emphasized early on which leads to concern over appearance related issues. Such issues often surface in the early stages of a female’s development, and continues on throughout her life. While trying to live up to the specific beauty standards that are proliferated through the media by society and culture, a woman’s life is often impacted drastically both physically and psychologically.
Dove is a personal care trademark that has continually been linked with beauty and building up confidence and self-assurance amongst women. Now, it has taken steps further by impending with a new advertising strategy; fighting adverse advertising. And by that it means contesting all the ads that in some way proliferate the bodily insufficiencies which exits inside women. Launched by Dove, the campaign spins round an application called the Dove Ad Makeover which is part of the global Dove “Campaign for Real Beauty” what has been continuing ever since 2004 and times print, television, digital and outdoor advertising. As Leech (1996) believed,” commercial consumer advertising seems to be the most frequently used way of advertising.” In which way the seller’s chief goal is to sway their possible spectators and attempt and change their opinions, ideals and interests in the drive of resounding them that the produce they are posing has a touch that customer wants that will also be in their advantage, therefore generating false desires in the user’s mind. One of women’s constant struggles is upkeep with culture and society’s ever-changing definition of beauty. Although both genders have hair on their bodies, the views and acceptability of the amount or the location of body hair vary immensely. In fact, women are often thought to be hairless and men to be hairier (DeMello, 2014). Women must then put in effort to uphold a standard, in which the idea that being feminine is natural and effortless (Toerien and Wilkinson, 2003).
