Heraldry is a system of signs and symbols, which originated in the Middle Ages as means of recognizing warriors on the battlefield. Since armor or coat of mail was worn, it was not difficult to distinguish friend from enemies even at some distance, for each man wore a uniquely designed shield. Medieval Heraldry originated early in the 12th century in Europe. Back in the earlier centuries when they battled, the knights could not distinguish between the opponents or their own kind, because the armors were very similar. So the knights began to decorate their shields with different colors and shapes so they can know who to kill and who is on their side. Also it helped see them from a distance. The shield also has fur, and that suggest a mark of dignity. The mantle represented the cloth that hang from the wreath, and it was also used to protect the head, back, and neck. The helmet varies with the bearer's rank and the century represented. The wreath is usually a primary color and is metal. The crest is whatever appears above the helmet, and there is always a crest on a coat of arms.
Blazon is a formal description of, most often, a coat of arms or flag, which enables a person to construct or reconstruct the appropriate image. The officers of arms developed the system of blazoning arms that is used today since the dawn of the art. This includes a description of the shield, the crest, and, mottoes. An understanding of these rules is one of the keys to sound practice of heraldry. The rules do differ from country to country, but there are some aspects that carry over in each jurisdiction.
The science of heraldry is not well known and underestimated in its importance in the Middle Ages. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture.

Depending on who you ask, there are many different things that come to people's minds when one hears the word, chivalry. Some might say: knights, castles, horses, damsels in distress, Knights in shinning armor.... i could go on and on. I think of all these things as well, but I also think of Jousting. In a time when courage, honor and integrity were valued jousting was not only a sport, but a way for knights to prove their skill and courage.
When compared with one another, these descriptions of armor reveal some basic distinctions that make the shield of Achiles of utmost importance.
Webster’s dictionary defines the word profession as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. Many Soldiers would not consider the Army as a profession but a way of life. Some think the word profession belongs to everyday jobs like a plumber, mechanic, or doctor. Dr. Don M. Snider stated “the Army is a profession because of the expert work it produces, because the people in the Army develop themselves to be professionals, and because the Army certifies them as such” (Snider, D. M. 2008). In October 2010, the Secretary of the Army directed the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) to lead an Army wide assessment of the state of the Army Profession. We have been at war as a Country for over a decade and the Army wanted to know how to shape the future of the Army as a profession and the effects the past decade had on our profession.

The materials used durring the Elizabethan era for the noble chidlren provided instant imformaton about the status of the person wearing them. As for noble children, those wearing fabrics that were expensive, or wearing colors that were the darkest or the brightest, they and their family were well respected. Noble chidlren wore clothing made of velvet's, furs, silk, lace, cottons and taffeta. These fabrics were usually imported from Italy or brought back from returning knights returning from the crusades. Color as well played an important part in an childs outfit.The same way fabric was imported so was color. The colors worn by the noble chidlren were: purple, gold, silver, crimson or scarlet, indigo blue and white. The clothes went through a complicated dying process and the range of colors were used for producing expensive clothes."The brightest or darkest colors were, the more expenisve to produce therfore it was limited to higher status children"(wilson). The reason beings so, was the colors, especially birghtest and darkest, were seen to be very rich and high power, therfore, being a noble child these colors were offered to you. There is also symbolic meaning behind the colors, which is why there were ruules to be made only allowing the certain classes to wear them. "The meaning behind colors symbolized events which occured in hstory, many of which dadted back" (Knight 100). Some of the color's meaning were related to biblical events, and religion was a very important thing.
Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or ideas. Symbolism is one of the most common practices of writing, and has been used for centuries. Symbols can often tell a story better than a human can because of there deeper meaning. When epic poems became popular during the Anglo-Saxon period they were filled with harrowing tales of bravery, and courage. Epic poems are long narrative poems that often have characters facing impossible tasks and still finding courage to defeat them. While many marvel at the original Anglo-Saxon dialect of Beowulf, Seamus Heany's modern English translation allows all readers to enjoy this tale.
The word chivalry comes from the French term “chevalrie” which when literally described meant the warrior attributes of armed knights on horseback. When the word was first used it did not have many, if any, of the moral or social aspects with which were later attributed to it. Reaching the later periods of the Middle Ages there begins to be a consensus opinion on the definition of a chivalrous knight. This knight would be polite, especially to women, loyal to his lord, a devout and humble Christian, and a powerful and strong-willed fighter. While no man could live up to these expectations, an ideal chivalrous knight would demonstrate all of these qualities. Chivalry would begin to fade in the 15th century following the unrealistic disposition of courtly love. From the beginning of the Crusades to this point however, chivalry was not only an important part of the cultural world of the upper classes it would come to define it. Indeed, many of the major parts of life in the Middle Ages including warfare, religion, ceremonies and romance were significantly affected by chivalry. These key aspects of life which chivalry impacted would define the cultural world of the upper classes throughout Europe.
Although it may be difficult to believe that a man who was once pronounced dead on arrival could later become the first amputee diver to serve in the U.S. Navy as well as the first African-American to reach Master Diver status, Carl Brashear is the man who did just that. The movie Men of Honor, released in 2000, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert DeNiro, only touches on the tremendous adversities that Carl Brashear has faced throughout his life. His story is one of struggle and triumph, but his only goal was to follow his promise to his father, to succeed, no matter what obstacles were to overcome.
