In some instances we can review a selected group of artists all of which interpret humanity and set views and philosophy’s of existentialism. In other ways these particular set of artists sought out to project ideas of the human within artistic practice, whether it be through emotive language or aesthetically through form. A particular artist whose intention was to seek out the human form in an affirmative way was Henry Moore. Moore was an avant-gardist and very much like a humanist and a surrealist and would positively express how we understand ourselves through his work and what motivates us, for example Grey Tube Shelter (1940), in which he’d take on the role of observer within the underground station and then create from within his studio. …show more content…
Minimalism could have been said to be a reaction to abstract expressionism and roots back from properties within modernism1. Modernism however was an epoch that arose within the late 19th century and early 20th century and could be described as the exploration and exploration or discovery and uniqueness and individuality. The purposes of modernism were seen to be based upon ideas of rejecting conservative ideologies and the portrayal of the real world.2 Similarly minimalist art characteristically shows no relation to reality. However it was often the case that the main purpose within minimalism was for only the viewer to respond to what is in front of them and to pay attention to the artworks medium. Famously conceded as minimalist was Frank Stella’s ‘The Marriage of Reason and Squalor,’ 1960. Stella here used a décor brush to paint back lines vertically using enamel paint, each line being the same thickness of the paintbrush, whereas the small thinner lines were not painted but are simply the gap between the two black lines. As famously said by Stella, ‘My painting is based on the fact that only what can be seen is there… What you see is what you see’. This quote clearly reinstates the idea of him presenting ideas of literally just the …show more content…
The terms Arte Povera can be translated to ‘Poor Art’ and was devised by the Italian art critic Germano Celant. Poor here means to its characteristic explorative variety of materials.1 The main purpose of the arte povera movement was to challenge or reject ideas around historical Italian art similar to ideas around Futurism again rejecting ideas of artistic tradition. Fundamentally, arte povera was interpreted to be based on the potential of movement, energy and material. It was also the demonstration of what was inanimate becoming animate. Some traditional examples of these ideas were in the work of Giovanni Anselmo’s Breathing, 1969.2 The piece presented two iron bars of 5m lengths that were sandwiched a sea sponge. As the metal contracts and expands, the sponge would almost breathe like a lung. Though unable to see the movement, Anselmo was presenting potential for movement, like fingernails growing. In one sense Arte Povera was a movement away from what can be seen as a dry and cerebral approach to artistic practice and theorisation accordingly to Artist Craig
Since its emergence over 30,000 years ago, one of visual art’s main purposes has been to act as an instrument of personal expression and catharsis. Through the mastery of paint, pencil, clay, and other mediums, artists can articulate and make sense of their current situation or past experiences, by portraying their complex, abstract emotions in a concrete form. The act of creation gives the artist a feeling of authority or control over these situations and emotions. Seen in the work of Michelangelo, Frida Kahlo, Jean Michel-Basquiat, and others, artists’ cathartic use of visual art is universal, giving it symbolic value in literature. In Natasha Trethewey's Native Guard, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness,
Art has always been considered the effervescent universal tool of communication. Art does not require a concrete directive . One sculpture, drawing or written creative piece, can evoke a myriad of emotions and meaning . Artistic pieces can sometimes be considered the regurgitation of the artist's internal sanctum. In Richard Hooks graphic painting,Adoption of the Human Race, the effect of the imagery, symbols ,color and emotional content projects a profound unification of a spiritual edict.
For the painting, the repetition that makes up the waves shows small movement in the art which is a part of minimalism. Also in the painting, the people on the sailboat admiring the ocean in all of its beauty and the movement of the buoy as they sail by shows realism, some of us can connect with that image. For the story, having a symbol like the cathedral is simple, but it brings out such a big part of the story at the end, which shows how Raymond Carver uses minimalism in his short story. The story also shows that individuals have stereotypes about people who are different than themselves, mainly the ones they are yet to meet. Stereotyping is done by all people whether we want to admit it or not, but this is how realism is shown in Carver’s short
In the beginning, Surrealism was primarily a literary movement, but it gave artists an access to new subject matter and a process for conjuring it. As Surrealist paintings began to emerge, it divi...
Before Impressionism came to be a major movement (around 1870-1800s), Neoclassical and Romanticism were still making their impacts. Remembering last week’s lesson, we know that both those styles were different in the fact that one was based on emotion, while the other was practical and serious. However, one thing they both shared was the fact that the artists were trying to get a message across; mostly having to do with the effects of the French Revolution, and/or being ordered to do so. With Impressionism, there is a clear difference from its predecessors.
The aesthetic form may be “tentatively define[d] as the result of the transformation of a given content (actual or historical, personal or social fact) into a self-contained whole,”. Art, when created in accordance to the aesthetic form, is the channeling of an experience into a subjective format, i.e. a novel, a painting, a piece of music, or any of the many different art forms. The reality of an event is translated into the chosen medium, and in this sublimation of the event, it is modified in accordance to the “demands of the art form” and the subjective perspective of the individual. The re-presentation of this event serves to “invoke the need for hope- a need rooted in the new consciousness embodied in the work of art”. When an event or object becomes the subject of a piece of art, it is necessarily changed according to the restrictions of the art form, artist, and veiwer. This change creates a new reality in where the event may take on a new meaning, thus challenging the original content of the event. This meaning is further influenced by subjectivity of the
Have you ever wondered what the differences are between the modernism and post modernism? It seems like it would be easy to describe what they are by the words and what they are usually associated with. Yet, it’s actually a lot different then your thinking. Modernism is the movement in visual arts, music, literature, and drama, which rejected the old Victorian standards of how art should be made, consumed, and what it should mean. Modernists want the absolute truth in everything. While on the other hand, Post Modernism is relating to, or being any of several movements (as in art, architecture, or literature) that are reactions against the philosophy and practices of modern movements and are marked by revival of traditional elements. By explaining a few things in detail I hope to show you a few things in contrast between the two in order to help you understand better.
Overall, Max Ernst, in particular the symbols and meanings that he is able to convey within his works. Moreover, he explored the unconsciousness of a human’s mind reflected through his works as part of the surrealism movement and revolted against the everyday reality of our lives – his primary theme and concerns of our sub-conscious and unconsciousness, in that I aim to explore.

One of the key ideas of the modern era was to forge the designs of the future on the corpses of the past, disregarding everything from the last era and moving forward with new ideals and styles. Refining and discarding they shaped, molded and constricted the ideas of design until reaching the pinnacle of minimalism. Creating design with pure aesthetics and reducing an object down to its core fundamental elements. Using the ideas of “less is more” or even “using less for more”, the designs ended up simple and elegant with a focus not in quantit...
Modernism can be defined as the post-industrial revolutionary era, where which the western world began to see a change in all spheres of living. The effects of the industrial revolution became prevalent towards the end of the nineteenth century and the modernist movement drew inspiration from this widespread change. Artists, writers, architects, designers and musicians, all began to embrace the changing world and denounce their pre-taught doctrines and previous ways of producing work. Society felt the urge to progressively move forward toward a modern way of thinking and living.
Many may argue that the Modernist movement was a completely new and unique movement within British literature. The goal of this paper is to determine whether or not the Modernist Literary Movement was completely unique or not. The similarities found in the works of Modernist authors and poets, such as Joseph Conrad and Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), will be examined against Romanticism themes and authors such as William Wordsworth. What will be found is that Modernism is not a completely unique movement, but one that combines elements from previous literary movements.
In order to understand minimal artists’ tendency to produce objects and not images, we need to define minimalism. Michael Delahunt at Artlex (1) refers to minimalism as “A twentieth century style of art stressing the idea of reducing a work of art to the minimum number of colors, values, shapes, lines and textures”. But I think this definition does not completely reflect what minimal artists did. They did not get interested in ‘complex’ things as colors, values, lines etc.
Modern Art does not follow any traditional rule, in fact Modern Art breaks this barrier. In the traditional way of painting, you must the true nature of your work; you must have the balance in creating it. The rules that are working on our universe must be applied to the old traditional painting.
Human’s have always struggled to express themselves. Art, is considered by many to be the ultimate form of human expression. Many assume that art has a definition, but this is not the case. Art, it can be said, is “in the eye of the beholder.” This simply means that what you consider art, someone else would not. Art is part of a person’s internal emotions, which signifies why different people see art as different things. Every type of culture and era presents distinctive and unique characteristics. Different cultures all have different views of what art can, and would be, causing art itself to be universally renowned throughout the world.
