Healthy People 2020

Healthy People 2020 was launched on December 2, 2010 by the government of the United States with a set of ambitious, yet achievable, 10-year agenda for improving the Nation’s health. Healthy People 2020 is the result of a multiyear process that reflects input from a diverse group of individuals and organizations. It is a science-based, 10-year national objective for improving the health of all Americans. For 3 decades, Healthy People has established benchmarks and monitored progress over time in order to encourage collaborations across communities and sectors , empower individuals toward making informed health decisions and to measure the impact of prevention activities. The vision of healthy people 2020 is to have a society in which all people live long healthy lives. (healthy people.gov)

The mission of this program is to strive to identify nationwide health improvement priorities. To increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease, and disability and the opportunities for progress it also provide measurable objectives and goals that are applicable at the national, State, and local levels. And also seeks to engages multiple sectors to take actions to strengthen policies and improve practices that are driven by the best available evidence and knowledge. Healthy people 2020also engages in identifying critical research, evaluation, and data collection needs of our society to achieve the set goals (healthy people.gov)

The vision and mission of this program is to promote health and wellbeing to all Americans while reducing the health care cost and increasing the life expectancy of all individuals. The mission reaches far beyond just encouraging exercising for thirty minutes...

Nurses will continue to play major roles in improving the lifestyle of society which will help the government to achieve these goals. The nurse can also help the government in having a positive attitude towards older adults, educating other nurses of the interesting field of geriatrics ad promoting the various opportunities that are associated with the rewarding yet challenging field of geriatrics.
