Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act

The unhealthy trend of Food in the United States is alarming with 1 in 3 children being obese or overweight. In the U.S. there is a lack of culture when it comes to food; our culture of food is essentially too much sugar, fat, and salt without enough fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act has all of the right principles to provide nutritious meals to students but yet, we are seeing uproar from our youth and I am curious to find out why. As a future parent, wanting the best for my children, I want to see passionate movement to continue improving the school lunch programs. I have two dogs now and I have spent countless hours researching dog foods, the origin of dog food itself, and the best formula for my dogs to be at their optimal health. I came across the concept of feeding them raw meals. Every Sunday once a month, I pick up a Butcher’s Blend from the local meat market and I prep their food for the next few weeks. It is time consuming but worth it because I know exactly what ingredients they are getting. Personally I was never raised with the best eating habits, and now as an adult I am attempting to overhaul my eating habits. Hopefully, when it comes time to start a family I will have gained more knowledge and be able to plan nutritious meals and snacks daily for our family to support healthy bodies and minds.

... active, eat better and grow up healthy. With the first increase of price for the National lunch program coming after 30 years, being a future parent, I would love to see ways to increase the price to improve the quality of food we are feeding our children with still keeping the low-cost or no-cost meals to children who may not have enough to eat. I think it would be a beneficial platform for any individual, parent, community, or elected official to support. We all can encourage a change. I interested in looking into how much other countries structure their lunch programs and how much they cost for the schools and families compared to the United States. I am also going to continue to stay informed about the Farm to School program that provides mandated funding for farm to school and garden programs, I love the idea of supporting locally and the community I inhabit.
